Flamin Blonde has arrived! A finish question now...

Hey guys,

Just got a great deal on an as new Thumb Flamin Blonde 07 LTD!!

Lovely bass - but thinking of going to BEAD for tuning to better suit my band needs. Who has converted a 4 string Wick to BEAD? Did you need to modify or change the JAN3?

you might have to wide'n the nut a bit and the tail pc might have to be opened a bitfor the thicker strings then set the bass up for the new strings and you should be good to go i used to have a fender pbass deluxe set up that way and i didn't have any problems so a warwick should be fine.
 
I recommend marking the strings in the spot that are too fat for the nut. Then "squeeze" them thinner in that spot with a vice grip. Do the same for the slots in the tailpiece. This way you can easily go back to standard tuning. I ran with BEAD for about 6 months with a band called Crush. I really missed the higher notes from the lack of a G string. I never bothered to glue the nut in so switching back was a snap but a 5 string was a better solution for me.

You don't need to modify the nut, maybe you will need to modify the bridge saddle.

Do this:

Put the G string saddle instead of E string, and move the rest of them one place lower. Then modify the G string saddle only. If you use taperwound strings, you don't even need to file too much.

With Warwick Black or EMP, you just have to put the strings on it, and maybe (I say maybe!) adjust the truss rod, due the string tension is higher using this set. Do as Flo said using EMPs. Just Check the pic below and you can see the B string will just fit in the G saddle. The nut will handle all just fine. Good luck!

Thanks guys - i actually think I have some spare saddles from a 5er somewhere in my bass bits box I can use...should be fine!

with the nut you just have to check to make sure its sitting all the way down and not being held up by the edges of the string slotand to check the break over angle and your good to go oh and thats s real nice bass good luck with it.
 
Good news! BEAD works nicely with some Fodera Nickle 65-125 :)

Apart from a quick set up with the bridge and lowering the nut a fraction, and giving the intonation a tweak, nothing major needed doing!

A finish question - found a small ding on the top arm rest area - which steamed out fine. I then gave the area a very light sand with 0000 steel wool and a wax, but now the area is slightly lighter than the rest of finish. If i heap the wax on, it darkens out but once the wax dries and is buffed off, the lighter area returns.

Any ideas? Should I just leave it and expect it to darken over time?? Or is there something else I can do??
 
Wow that's quite the gauge for your Fodera strings...65-125? they must be awesome for dropped tunings!
 
lemon oil would be your answer, it will darken the color.

boiled linseed would be good too.
 
Yeah its the low 4 strings from a 5 string set, strung up BEAD....

So technically now, my 5er goes higher rather than lower than the 4 :)

This' an absolute beauty Jono.
I've always loved that LTD.The Aussie lacewood(silky oak) is gorgeous.Rusty'll be able to fix that light patch mate,no problemo.
I rekon either let time & wax do the job,or give the whole body a going over(scotchbright)to even up the area,making it 100% uniform.
What's your faveourite(onboard)settings with this bass?
 
Cool yeh I'll let the Dominant guys take a look - its really only a small patch thats lighter so i doubt i'll do anything too drastic :)

Fave settings are both pickups blended 50/50, switch in lowest position (parallel humbucking maybe?) and eq flat :)
 
I've strung both my Wicks to dropped C (CGCF) with a .135 as the lowest string. It's always been really easy, just filing the nut only a little bit with the .135 string itself so that it fills the gap in the nut and it's effortless to push the string down on the first fret. And taperwound goes smoothly through the bridge.
