OK, a while back I posted a request for advice and reviews of a short scale Thumb. I got a couple of helpful posts on getting one, but not on how they play. You see, my issue is one of anatomy - my fingers are short and stubby. I've always had a good degree of discomfort playing standard scale basses, especially near the nut. So, since I am so in love with my Thumb fretless, need a good backup bass and would like to have a fretted bass for recording, I thought a short-scale Thumb might be a good option. I have a great FNA Jazzman, but, although it's a real nice bass, ya know, it's just not a Thumb.
Well, as luck would have it, last week, I happened to be in Orlando picking up an amp from the repair shop and stoppped in to see my buds at Bass Central. I've been doing buisiness with them since '99 with I bought my KYDD EUB and have had stellar service from them over the years. I was almost ready to plunk down some cash for a MM Sterling (a nice bass, IMHO) when I asked about the shorty. They had one in stock, brand new, actually still in the box. Grasshopper got it out for me and I played and contrasted for over an hour, mainly between the Thumb and the Sterling.
Bottom line, I got the Thumb shorty. Tonight was it's inaugural gig and it was fantastic. It was comfortable for me to play, still sounded like a Thumb, but was a bit lighter with less neck dive. The only problem I encountered was a missing missing setscrew for the D string saddle (replacement already on the way). It's a lovely bass and I'm looking forward to many happy years with it.
