Finished Necks...

I'm writing this to get a general consensus from my
fellow forumers.

I've recently become INFATUATED (to say the least)
with the NS designed body, and am looking for a nice
Streamer Stage I, Spector NS4CR, or possibly even a
Streamer LX Custom. (Which, wouldn't apply to this
thread.)

Now, the Streamer I was looking at (one which is for
sale on this very forum) as well as the Spector I've
found on eBay both have finished necks.

Now, I for the love of life have never owned a bass
guitar with a finished neck, and thus have no sense
of comparison between that of a finished and non-
finished necks.

How would the lot of you compare the feel, or the
playability of a finished neck versus that of a non-
finished neck? As far as speed, or ease of play, and
everything else.

I'm pretty much thinking that I won't like it, considering
the fact that I'm in LOVE with my unfinished Ovangkol
neck on the Pro Line.

You won't like it mate. I now dislike the feel of a finished neck, though I played them for 20+ years. Oh, and satin it worthless. ALL finishes are gloss, they add flattening agents to make them semi gloss or flat. These agents soften the finish, within 6 weeks you'll have a gloss neck.

OR, go into ANY music store, pick up ANY bass with a finished neck (gloss, see above) and see how you like it.
 
Well, that's why I ask, atm I'm not able to stroll
into a store and check it out. As soon as I move
I'll be able to check. The shop that'll be down the
road from me carries ESP Guitars, and I know for a
fact there's a Tom Araya sig sitting on a rack in there.

(Just wandering as the bass guitars I've come across
are all for sail or auction currently. I'd hate to miss as
opportunity, but would hate to have to resell anything
too. Not my cup'o'tea so to say. Of course, I get to
wait until I actually RECEIVE my tax refund to make any
moves, lol.)
 
Bottom, line, the finish adds drag.

Though 4-0 steel wool is amazing. Not as slick as a waxed neck, but good.

I really do not like finished neck.
I don't even like a smooth unfinished neck such as maple.

Man, this is seriously limiting my choice of bass eh.

but hey, everyone is different, you may not even notice the difference between the two
you got to try it first hand
 
gloss is no good. i feel like i'm fighting the neck once the sweat starts.
 
I've got no problems with a finished neck. Funny thing is, I also don't even care that much whether the neck is as thick as that of a Warwick, or as thin as that of an Ibanez SR.............Yeah, I feel the differences, but they don't bug me at all..........
 
it ddnt bother me. finished and unfinished neck, as long as its a warwick, i can play it :D
 
I have no preference. The Bongo has a finished neck that's just as comfortable/playable as my 'Vette. My Ibanez has a Fender-ish finsihed neck, and I've owned (and sold to my drummer, so I still have access to) a Epiphone EB-3, which has a polyester, VERY glossy finish, and I have managed to get along on all types, with really no preference in any direction.

Worst case scenario... Take care of your instruments and sell it if you can't make do.
 
As the owner of both painted and natural necks, I have to say that although they feel different they do nothing to affect my playing
 
I'm with Lex on that one, it's not a big enough difference in my books to matter.

At least in 4-strings.

And of the great variety of 5-strings
there's only VERY few that bugz me,
namely the std Wick-5.

OTOH there's just nothing whatsoever
beneficial about a finished neck. They
just happen to exist. And cost extra.
Your move. Your money.

Akchewlee, there's ONE schneckin that
bugz me about finished necks that are
not clear [natchurl] or just black: Neck
swapping becomes a problem, unless
both basses are the same color ... and
how often does THAT happen ?

I have a Streamer Stage 1 for sale here in the forum and it has the finished neck. To me it does not slow down the playing and I always keep a rag hanging from my back pocket on my pants anyways but I have not used it when I play this bass. It does not slow me down at all. Usually (maybe my technique is wrong) but when I slide dwn the neck I apply more pressure to the fingers touching the fretboard and my thumb gets almost detached from the back of the neck when I do this. I then use my Thumb to anchor me to the spot where I am playing.

I have never had any problems with finished or unfinished necks.
 
I'm also with Lex. I've played finished and unfinished and sating and when I play, I don't see the difference really.
 
since 1995 I never played a finished neck... Till I got the X Bass. Great bass, but the neck felt like a bottle of beer in my hands.
The oil finished neck is by far much faster and nicer to touch.
