heres a question, i guess theres probably right or wrong answer, but its regaurding eq, do you guys eq your sound on your bass or on your amp?
or is it a combination of the two?
Has anyone found it better results from one or the other?
 
Mainly on the amp for me, then I can add or subtract from my bass depending on how I feel while I'm playing.

I use both...but right at the moment my bass is set flat and the mids slightly boosted on the amp...
 
i eq it on my amp, but for finetuning for example on stage i do it on my bass.
 
I do it on my amp, and then during a song if I feel I need a slight change, I'll dial some in on the bass.

Depends on the bass I'm using.

Generally, I set my personal 'flat' positions on the bass and then tweak the amp to get the sound I'm after. After that, all adjustments are made on the bass.

For the most part, I've got my amp where I want it and use my bass tone controls to go from there. If I'm using my Streamer or Fortress, I generally bump the low mids on the amp a little and roll off some treble to compensate for the 2-band EQs. If I'm using the Thumb, I generally bump the amp's bass up a little.
 
I definitely find that adjusting lets say the highs on my my amp sound different then adjusting the same highs on my bass. I like to set my bass flat and my amp so that there's more low bass and mid mids. I also have my horn up half way for clarity.
 
I use every tool I have to get my best possible sound. If I have an onboard eq, I try it. If it gets better I use it, if not, I bypass it.
I have two thumbs NT until now, and I had the same experience. After weeks of tweakings, the best sound I got was with everything flat :-)
 
the other thing to keep in mind is outboard DI vs. DI out of amp. on tour, i always run bass through an outboard DI so it's bass straight to the FOH. i usually listen a little during soundcheck to the sound in the house without the amp and adjust the bass accordingly. as far as the amp, i always set it flat and the sound is usually close to dead on what i heard in the house. if changes need to be made onstage due to size, construction or just unruly frequencies, i adjust them from the amp.
 
Being in the same band for 6 years now, and with the same sound guy, I worked on my sound using my bass and backline. The line out of my HELLBORG preamp have the "AVALON U5" Quality, according to Bass Player Magazine's review... And I use a mic too to bring some nice mids from my 411 pro cabinet.

So I do the opposite way, usually the bass channels in the FOH console are flat :-)
 
there are different types eq's and different types of using an eq

eq's like on the amps include bass,mid,treble parameters are there to shape your tone graphic eq is mostly for cutting some frequincies that doesnt works with to acoustic of the room or hall whatever
 
Cool Mako, I've never seen that so clear, but I guess you are right.
