Earthing problems?

Over the past week i've been noticing some high pitched noise when i keep the bass plugged into an amp or even directly into a computer..it seems to be an earthing problem cos when i hold the steel part of the cable with my fingers, the noise seems to disappear..

Any ome else faced this problem? Or know what i can do to fix it? I have a streamer stage 1 5 string bass.. This is slightly urgent..i have a few shows and recordings lined up very soon..
 
usualy there is a wire connecting the bridge to the electronics...try checking that maybe

(this is presuming warwick basses have this feature, im not actually sure :oops: )
 
High pitch usually occur when an amp is plugged into a power socket outlet without earth. Then it is the connection via the bridge which lessen the noise if you touch but it is still not earthed. Have you checked the power socket or tried another one? In many houses the living room do not have earthed sockets but the kitchen always has. It is better that you have connection to the earth via the outlet, it is more safe in case you amp is failing. The connection between the electronics via the bridge is to take away the last remaining noise as Stroud already wrote.
 
derherr, the noise should dissapear when you touch the strings the same as it dissapears when you touch the jack. If not, it means your earth link is disconnected somewhere.
Sometimes the coated strings like Elixirs, beeing insulated, they don't let you make contact to the ground. Just scratch a little the strings at the bridge.
 
The problem still continues..I find that there is noise only on the treble pickup..if i have the treble pickup on zero volume and everything else on full volume, then there is no noise at all but when i turn the treble volume up, it starts hissing..

please help me out cos i have a few recordings and shows which will be in some jeopardy if i can't fix it soon enough..
 
Pull the bridge pickup out carefully by removing the screws. check to see that the wire isn't damaged or crushed at all until it goes through the hole in the body towards the preamp. Then check the other side of the wire to its soldered points and check them for cracking or loose wires. It sounds like the shield for the pickup has worked loose and is making spotty contact. If you find a problem with the wire, a quick touch with a soldering iron should get it back right. Other than that, it could be a loose solder connection at the balance pot... ~M~
 
Just take it to an electronist / electrician (I don't know the job's name in english). It will fix your problem in 2 minutes, and it will cost you almost nothing...

I finally do think it was just paranoid me ... the bass seems perfect! the problem must have been at the venues and studios ... I played a few gigs and even some recordings after that and there was no issue!

The only reason I got freaked is that it happened so many times in a row .. but that must have just been my bad luck!

most likely a power issue at the places you were getting the noise... happens often enough...
