Aw, man! You just made me remember a dream I had about a year after I bought my Warwick. It changed how I feel about my bass.
I was waxing my Thumb when I saw a little ding in the oil-finish like a fingernail scratch on the top horn. I started to rub some wax into it and the wood underneath was so soft and deteriorated that the entire horn crumbled and broke off! I was so upset, not only for losing my bass, but because I thought it was my fault for not waxing it enough.
Needless to say I checked my bass upon waking, and spent the next hour or so giving it a good buffing! I think I went through a whole can of wax in like 3 months after that.
Now, for a psychoanalysis for those interested:
I think I had this dream because when I first bought my 'Wick, I was afraid of damaging the softer, exotic, oil-finished wood. I was always very careful and slighlty nervous when I played it, to the point that my fears actually hindered the enjoyment of playing. This probably stems from the fact that this is an expensive instument, one which I could have never afforded in the first place were it not for a huge stroke of luck five years ago. Basically, I would worry about damaging it to the point of obsession.
Yet through the years I have become much more comfortable with it, to the point that it even has some fingermarks under the g-string and belt buckle dents on the back from dancing around. And I think realizing what the dream meant for me was a huge part in that change. It helped me understand that my obsession/fear was unhealthy as well as unecessary. It had all the standard life-lessons: nothing lasts forever - life is about living in the moment - money isn't everything. It helped me grow as a person in general. When I play my Warwick now, I get even more enjoyment out of it than when I first bought it. And that's saying a lot!
Now, I'm not saying this is why you had your dream - it's why I had mine. But hopefully this outlook can help you or anyone who has, or has had, the same feelings about thier beloved Warwick. (Or any other posessions I suppose, but this forum is for basses, so we'll leave all that for another time).
Thanks for sharing!
