Dramatic Orchestral Pieces

I'm looking for a dramatic orchestral piece (or pieces) that sounds something along the lines of "O Verona" by Craig Armstrong.

It's definitely longer than his piece, and contains a double bass drum hit every other bar or something similar.

Has been a staple in dramatic movie trailers for years, I just can't find one that has it on YouTube.

Anyone know or care to guess?
 
Tchaikovsky is very good at writing dramatic pieces, as is Strauss (Space Odyssey theme). Moussorgsky's Rite of Spring is also pretty great. Just pay attention to what you're listening to, and you'll find stuff.
 
im a big fan og craig armstrong. have "piano music" and "as if to nothing". dont know o verona though

maybe its on the film music CD. i'll see if i can find out
 
yeah its on film music. i'll probably buy a copy within the next month. i'll get back to you if i can work out what other track your on about :P
 
I'm also a bit of an Armstrong fan.

Though, I'll admit I'm more geared toward Clint Mansell.
 




Can't think of a specific piece, but I do know
some things about film. It's quite possible
that the dramatic drum hits are overdubbed
for the trailer. IOW, you may be hunting for
a piece that doesn't exist in the form in which
you're hunting for it, which would also mean
the form in which you describe it would just
mislead your "music librarians".

Are you looking for the effect demonstrated
by Spracht Zarathustra, as used in "2001, A
Space Odyssey"? With the killer kettle drums?

Something, I guess similar would be the word?

The particular one I'm after has a choir singing
as well. The bass drum hit is only during the
breaks of the choir.
 
I find the 'Halo 2' theme quite dramatic.

Okay, the song was in the Simpsons from this past week.

In the church, the nuns were singing it.

4th movement LVB 9th sym ?

Very huuuuge.

Very choral.

AAMOF IIRC 9th is referred to as "The Choral"
and 4th movement is the "Ode to Joy".

I don't recall the bass drum hits, but during a
male vocal solo there are "anvil" hits, like the
dood's at work at the forge or such. You know,
that olde "Industrious Krauts" image thing ....

Authentic or original version would be sung in
German. Are the Simpsons Lutherans ? Do the
Lutherans have nuns ?

Scroll down to 9th sym 4th mvmt, Presto, and
when it plays, skip up to about the 13 minute
mark [cuz the complete mvmt is 23 min long].

The Ode to Joy theme begins sneaking in at
about 1:15 and by 2:15 is fully revealed, with
the theme approaching full swing about 3:25.
Somewearz around the 8th or 9th minute is
the music for the anvil dood mentioned above
[unless I'm wrong .. jeeezz ... ]

But for really HEAVY DRAMA you gotta skoot
on up to about 12:40. Wiggy didn't write for
short-attention-spans or instant-gratification.

Oh man, you've got to be kidding me, I was just
listening to Ode to Joy the other day!

Perhaps, as you stated earlier, the bass drum
hits were dubbed in by another. I remember the
version I was looking for being quite dark, and
very powerful, I was almost able to close my eyes
and see the industrialization of the Communists,
the sea of Red marching by the Kremlin and through
Red Square.

Anyhoo... Thanks very much Golem, this has been
plaguing my brain for about a week now!

Great song!!! - can't here any connection, though. But I love the song from RA

"Freude schöner Götterfunke" - cool stuff. But why the connection with industry and communism?

The first time I heard it, it was being used
as background music for something related
to that. I guess I should have explained
that part, lol.

I agree, "Do You Call My Name" by RA is a
great song. RA is a great band :d
