Having scoured the internet, it might be the purest act of optimistic folly to even consider asking, but if anyone does, by any remote possibility, have a Dolphin for sale, please let me know.

yep, saw that Dolphin on eBay…just weighing up whether a) I like the finish and b) I think I could barter the seller down a bit.

Would make a very nice housemate for my Thumb fretless.
 
Import duties on that one would add on about another £550.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

Well, according to the Warwick website, you can only get it new as a Custom Shop.

Used, there are some on Reverb, the only ones listed are in the US: https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=warwick dolphin

Ebay shows a couple of nice ones out of Japan, but like you said, in both cases HMRC will want their pound of flesh.

Is there any way you could make a trip as part fo a holiday, and bring one back?

Yes, I’ve noticed the glut of red Dolphins on eBay in Japan. Curiously all the same photo across about ten auctions with different prices…best avoided, I reckon.

The cost of a trip to go and get one would probably be more than paying the import duty.

I’ll just be a patient lad and wait for one to emerge.
 
Japan - yes there is multiple sellers of the same item.

There was a Japan made run of Dolphins maybe very early 1990's

Sticking with Japan and that refin DP1 @DiMarco posted earlier...

It listed on Reverb 2 days ago. Down to $2200. No doubt still 10 other sellers on eBay. I'm guessing, hoping they just all know each other and have a network to sell gear. Or something like that. Lol.

If that price is real, that would certainly help offset any potential customs charges. 100% positive reviewed seller, for what that's worth. You'd have a bit of purchase protection from Reverb as well ofc.

On a side note, always interesting to see some of the factory painted Wicks gone natural. Seems fairly obvious why they would choose to paint this one (maybe even waxed before realizing one sides flame was not there). That top piece of flame maple isn't quite so flamy as the bottom. Might as well cover it up with some paint. Not many flame maple Dolphins out there.

Other thought... those two pieces of wood are so different looking, how could they not notice it when they were gluing it together. So maybe it was always intended to be painted. Mysteries of the Warwick factory...

Yeah...from reading the seller's notes, it's not exactly a Frankenstein's monster, but not exactly prime Warwick, either.

That Reverb price is a fair reduction, but the perils of shipping from so far away unnerves me...I dread to think what the refund/retun hassles would be if it got banjaxed en route.
