$$ Distortion

Whenever I play a note the initial attack
is distorted. If I hold the note it stays distorted
for about a second and then the level drops and
the distortion stops. I can't figure out what it is
the amp is not peaking, it does this when the gain
is off, its much quieter but it still distorts. My
bass doesn't have a 9v in it right now, i've just been
running it passive. My $$ has had a lot of problems
lately, there is this high pitched ring and now this
My bass is deteriorating :confused: What can I do?
I have treated the bass well, do I have to send it back
to warwick?
 
Hi Kyle,

If it is in passive mode, without the battery, the sound should be undistorted... I mean... there is nothing to distort there.

What you can do is lower the pickups. They are probably around 2.5 mm to the strings now. Try to set the bridge pickup at 4 mm, and the neck pickup to match the output of the bridge pickup (lower than)

But maybe it's not because of the output, I often have some kind of distorted sound with my $$ and most of the time it's something with the open polepieces.
 
I'll check it out in the morning, cause its really bugging me.
Do you know whats happening with the high pitched ring?
Because that happens when I'm recording and theres no
way to get rid of it. It happens on multiple cables, in a
music shop, everywhere. Its the bass
 
no. Its like a high pitched ring.
its not fret buzz, its about 2000hz or so

My chicken (buck buck, say it out loud) is as clean as a whistle. I also have a SUB, with the original open pole pup, I can beat the livin' sh!t out of it, with no distortion.

I've risen my PUs pretty much - this gives me great great fingerstyle sound, as long as I don't dig in too much.
but on the other hand, as I said few times: I personally don't have the feeling the sound gets more bite with digging in (at least not as noticeable like with J-PUs) - so for me the $$ became the cool easy fingerstyle groove-machine with fat growly sound, more than my "beat it like hell"-bass (<- I'm looking for one right now ;) )
 
Yeah I think the $$ is the bass for a big sound but not for bite.

My own experience is that the pick ups, when lowered sort out the distortion problem. As for a ringing, that's new.
 
i majorly lowered the pickups and it went away
YAY and my bass sounds much less muddy yay $$

I always thought that if Warwick would have carried over the flamed maple cap from the fna to the $$, it would have solved that bite problem.

But then again, I'd still love to play the nt bubinga $$ before I make my final judgement on the line, too.

Hey Kyle, you're young. It's a privilege. It won't last. Enjoy it while it does. But it comes with a
price. That price is you get to hear things that many of us old folks can't. Like high-pitched
ringing. So you probably don't need to worry about it cos most folks older than you won't
hear a thing but your fantastic bass playing!

Ok, I'll take my tongue back out of my cheek now ;)
 
Kyle, this is really a long shot but i think i managed to recreate the ringing sound you are having with my $$ and my mobile phone. If I put my phone over the pickups or have it within a few feet of my bass it gives you this high pitch ringing, around 2.5khz. Do you have your phone in your pocket when playing or in front of you?

Unfortunately i can't get any recordings done until the weekend.

As I said its along shot....
 
Actually to be honest, my bass goes nuts when my sony ericson is in my pocket, but it sounds like mobil;e interfearance any way.
 
I've actually started to use my phone + distortion to make noises!

Know what you mean... but I've already got my very own high-pitched ringing in my left ear... wear ear-plugs, folks!
 
Yea thats the sound Callum, but its happened in a studio
with no electronics in it, including my phone. But its
gone now, so now i just need a 9v and some new strings
:)
