Discolouration of finish

Hi All,

Firstly, just wanted to say high- just joined and looks like I'll find a lot of useful info here. To the problem at hand- I've attached a photo of the finish discoloration of my 2001 Corvette standard. As you can see there is discolouration of the finish around the control knobs which (I now know) was caused by sweat from my fingers :x

Is there anything I can do to remedy this or am I stuck with it? Also, should I have been using some sort of wax on my bass to protect it and should I have got that with my bass when I bought it?

Welcome aboard,

From the pics it is hard to know if the body is natural Bubinga or oil red finish. Depending on that taking care of it will change.

Thanks for the response. I THINK that it's an ash body with a coloured oil finish (70% certain?). I don't know if any info can be gained from the serial number which is C074063-00.....

Would it not be possible to remove the finish back to natural and then refinish it?

1st of all
Red Oil finish is no oil finish
The bass is stained with a water based product and then a thin layer of satin laquer is applied.

The problem is that the red stain will be deep in the pores so even if you sand it down completely red spots will appear again if humidity from your finishing product sinks into the wood.

What you can do is sand it and apply a real oil based finish in red or in some dark color - but there are not a lot of good products you can use for this.

If I where you I would leave it like that!

I don't think that the blotches come from sweat but rather from something that was applied to the body maybe when you had a change in electronics or something.

Eg if you waxed the bass (which should not be done on this finish) or some contact spray for the pots etc. might have sunken in where the holes are and got under the satin laquer.


Refinishing it in a way that it will look better than now will be a pain in the ass

I would consider doing it IF I could get hold of the same/very similar colour and quality of the Warwick oil finish....otherwise I probably wold just leave it

Incidentally, can anyone point me in the right direction to get hold of an alternative good quality coloured-oil for refinishing if I decided that was the way to go?

Do NOT use Wax on this bass!!!
Other than this, I think you have a gorgeus bass, and those are normal marks for a player's instrument. Be proud of them, especially if they are yours
