Does anyone know what Ryan is doing from 1:15-1:17 or just the whole slapping part from 1:03-1:17 in general, and does anyone know how he gets that "MOAN" at 1:09, any input would be apprecitated, tabs would be greatly appreciated :lol: and a video explaining how to do that part or the whole song in general put on youtube would be amazing :shock: :lol: :lol: :lol:

I have been studying his sound for a long time. The mwah sound comes from the Thumb bass and the fact that they are tuned down to B. The loose strings accentuate the mwah sound a lot. He also uses compression so when you hit the strings hard you get the sound and not the noise. If you don't have compression it sounds to harsh and you will tend not to hit the strings as hard to keep the sound right. I use the same compression he does and it helps a lot. You can do his down stroke technique without a huge jump in volume. He also does a lot of chords and chords slides that make for that sound he makes at 1:09. Remember everything sounds different in the mix so when you try these techniques do them with the music on so you don't here just the bass sound.

I have or or have owned all 3 types of NT Thumbs. I can say that that bass has a lot to do with his sound.
 
The way I play the 'Moan' at 1:09 is just a vibrato followed by a downwards slide on the A string, I think I usually hit the 16th fret or somewhere around there.

From 1:03 through 1:17 is a lot of muted thumps through various strings, with plucking of the G string throughout. I hit a certain pattern to mimic it, I have no idea what it is though, it's just a reaction for me, lol. I know I usually pluck the 4th, 7th, and 10th frets though.

Martinie is a great player for his use of variations, just like Flea. Sometimes, it's hard to play like him, so I found it's best to try to think like him, while playing... If that even makes any sense, lol.

I personally use www.bassmasta.net for all my tabbing needs.
 
Listen to Nothing to Gein at around 1:05 on. It's got a "solo" and lots of mwah junk.

For some reason the bass is distorted on this video. It's not on the CD.
 
theres no way that that is a bass, that is much simpler on a guitar, why would he do it on bass :?: :?: but it is cool, it adds this weird feeling to the song
 
The thing thats going wocka wocka is the guitar. The soloish thing under that is the bass. It's not suppose to have distortion though.
 
ohh ok then, i thought that that was the bass going wocka wocka, I couldn't hear the bass to well on my crappy mac speakers

Sorry - I really don't know anything about Mudvayne. That's the first time I've seen or heard them.

I don't think their mothers hugged them very much when they were little.

Its been said before but I'll say it again.
There are two reasons to listen to Mudvayne:

Matthew McDonough - drums
Ryan Maritnie - bass

An opinion only...but one shared by many... :wink:
 
Well, Greg Tribbet (sp?) is a great guitar
player as well... However, I think he and
Chad's talents are best show-cased within
Hell Yeah than Mudvayne, so I agree to a
certain extent.
 
if you check out more recent mudvayne, they've lost the make-up. not as scary. i like it more!
 
I think that Greg Tribbet is one of those musicians that has the tricks in the bag but never uses them. He's pretty much a rhythm guitarist in Mudvayne and if he did anything more than that then Ryan wouldn't have as much room to play. I'm sure if he released some solo CD that it would be pretty crazy.

As far as Chad goes. He's not the best but it fits and his singing doesn't hurt the songs so I guess I don't mind him. He sucks live though.

But yes I agree Ryan and Matt make the band. When I saw Ryan's bass on the Dig video when I was 15 ro 16 I was like wow I love the look and sound of that thing. Nothing has changed since then and I still haven't found anything that can match my Thumb's sound.

well, I'm with you there. As fore greg tribbet, I think he's a good rythm guitar with some nice riffs here and there. As for Chad, always thought he did the job good. I mean, he isn't an opera signer, but an opera signer in Mudvayne would be kinda "special".
