Hey guys. i was wondering if anyone has a thumb bass with soemthing other than MEC electronic/pickups in it. perhaps share your thoughts /comparisons and maybe even some sound clips. i am just a little curious as to what it might sound like with a set of Nordstrand J's or even some EMG's. but i am scared to make the change as i might not like the sound (lol). any idea's / comments would be nice.

thanks !
Brian.

Hey, I changed the pickups in my thum-bo to bartolini Classic bass series(CBJD). I also swapped the preamp for an audere 4 band with z-switch. I would highly recommend that you perform this swap. It removed some of the harshness that I had with the MEC preamp and pickups. Of course, it added more punch and growl. Thats what we buy warwicks for right? haha

what did it due for the slap tone?

the slap tone just improved. Where it was thin before, it became more detailed and kind of beefy.

awesome!!! thanks!!

When you changed the preamp did you end up with the same Knob configuration? (2 stacked and one not stacked) or did you have to cut holes for extra knobs? I am assuimg that you did for the Switch.

nope i didn't. I decided to go for a four band preamp. Audere offers several configurations of stacked knobs. I changed mine to a vol/vol stack mid/mid stack and a bass/treble stack. I cut an additional hole for the Z-switch. I just decided to go for the most versatile option without regard to convenience. I'm sure you can opt for something similar. Check em out...
