Difference between SSI-5 and SSI-4

The 5-string has soapbars and the 4-string has a p/j pups. I have the 5-string and really like it. My question is, how does the tone of the 4-string differ from the 5-string, given the different pickup specs?
 
Hi man,

It is more than the pickups... The neck mass is a lot bigger, so the sound is different. I feel 5 stringers to sound modern, more articulated. The 4 stringers feels old school somehow, but still fat with the Warwick growl.
 
I agree with Florin, the 5 string has a more modern sound then the 4, i have both...
 
I'd like to add that with the 5 stringer, which does sound very modern and articulate it is possible to create oldskool tone through dialing back the highs a bit and dialing in the lows a bit more. With the 4 string you can't create a more modern tone. This makes the 5 string more versatile, but you will have to get used to the wide neck (which shouldn't be any problem, although it looks like a log this neck is very easy to play!)...
 
I've had the 5 string for about two weeks and I have already gotten used to the wide neck for the most part. There are still alot of things that I can do on my 4-string that I can't on this, but it'll take some time to really get used to it.
 
The 5 string neck also has to pull against one extra string, there's more tension on it. Nice thread, it shows a 5 string is quite a different instrument than the respective 4 stringer. ;)

I've beentweaking the setup until it played as light and easy as the 4 string I have. This made a huge difference. Now I can play everything on both. Slapping the SS1's low B through an overdrive creates earth shattering sounds!

I love the SS1 for its versatile tone and great playability. Maybe it doesn't have as much growl as a thumb or SS2 but it is a truly great sounding monster.
 
Well the growl we all talk about is not always a good thing. At the same time, a totally clean tone from some of the modern basses is too bleh. So I feel the SS1 5 is modern sounding but with a bit of an edge, growl.

I also bought the LX-4 and I'll tell you, the SS1 5 tone is so rich, deep and complex. The LX-4 doesn't compare. Probably no other bass does.
