Dear thumb owners....

I love the punchy tone on my '99 Thumb BO with MECs, but, I don't have a Thumb with EMGs to compare it to. I guess it depends on what kind of music you play mostly when you say "prefer"--I see you have a NT bass which is a different animal than a BO. Battery life is excellent on this Thumb and I play 80s rock stuff mostly. I don't know if this helps you but, perhaps there is another bass player you might listen to in your area that uses EMG pups since this sounds like a personal choice.

Cheers for the reply Ronald, I have MECs in my thumb NT and I have no problems with them, they do the job brilliantly but I have seen lots of artists go for the EMG option on their Thumbs 9aswel as other W models)

I'm not perosnally a big fan of EMG's, i've tried both EMGhz's and active EMGs in previous basses and the MECs see to be the winner for me personally.
 
i quite love my thumb with the mec but maybe only because it has 3-band eq too compared to the other two thumbs equipped with 2-band eq and emg pu ....
the emg is more aggressive which can be very sweet too, i like them both anyway but my vote goes to mec atm!

Agree!

I had SD, EMG, Bartolini (factory) & MEC on my thumb NT, I stay with MECs, but I always want to put the Bartolini PUs back with different preamp,
they provide the best finger tone I had ever heard, if you like slapping, the MEC is the best, the bartolini slapping sucks....

I've tried EMG, Barts and MEC on my 86 thumb (EMG equiped from factory) and definitly prefer MEC.
 
I once heard that the original MEC jazz pup was an EMG clone. I have emgs in one and mecs in the other, I cannot here a difference as far as the pups are concerned. Very similar.
 
I've owned Thumbs with both EMG and MEC and I'll be a monkey's uncle if I could tell the difference! LOL
 
I've played both and couldn't tell the difference both sounded awesome. Out of the two i played i prefered the one with EMG- but that might have been because it was an 88 with one piece bridge.
 
I have a question about EMGs... can anyone find a pair that'll fit on a 5 string thumb? Because I've only seen Jazz pups for 4 strings and all of their 5 string pups are soapbar shaped.
 
Which Thumb do you have?
On ealry 5 strings Thumb NTs Warwick used the 4 strings' EMG set
 
I guess the safest thing to do is to check EMG's exact dimensions on their site
 
IIRC the thumb uses two of the same size of pickups - i want to say standard jazz neck pickups for size and dimensions but someone will need to clarify this for me.
