Custom Thumb BO 5

Hi! Greetings everyone! I am new member to the forum but I have owned
a warwick bass for the past 6 years and have totally fell in love with it :)
I have decided to get another bass in the form of custom shop Thumb bolt on 5
and I think I will need the input and opinion from the more senior and experienced
members here.
So far, I am thinking about changing the body wood with Afzelia and replace the preamp
with MEC 3-band EQ. Simple modification really but what I really want to know is, will I still
get the same low end as the thumb BO with ovangkol body? What do you guys think?

Hi Pratama, welcome; a Thumb BO with Afzelia body hmm would be interesting, soundwise i guess it will be the thumb sound with a bit more air. nice one keep us updated about it. what other bass do you own?

And for the bass, currently I own a 2003 FNA Jazzman 5 string. You have a very nice
collection of basses there sir!
 
No, you will get lower end :) You have to think over any detail becouse every small detail will effect the tone. If the tone is what you like the most on Thumb BO than maby this wood choice is not so good for your CS Thumb BO.
I believe you will get smoother, deeper tone, not as aggresive.
Yes, you will need 3-band EQ with this wood. Afzelia will give you less mid and more bass frequencies and you will need additional EQ to bring mid back if you like that kind of tone. On the other side, you may take only afzelia top and leave original body wood. Top will not affect the tone that much as it will affect changing body wood.

Afzelia has a similar density to ovangkol & bubinga, so i dont think it's going to change the tone very much at all. I think you'd have a very hard time picking the difference blindfolded.I dont wanna sound like I'm undermining Goran's opinion, coz that's what were talking here, opinions :)
The Thumb 5's pickup placement might well mean it'll retain it's agressive midrange, even if you were to chose a very bassy wood, like ash, or a very bright wood, like ebony.
I think the 3 band eq's a good idea.

Thanks Goran and Greg. So if I get this right I still retain the thumb characteristic
with a little bit of low end boost. Alright cool. I try to get a quote and update you guys with the progress

I would not call it boost, rather smoother bass tone.
Again, if you want to change only look of the bass consider taking afzelia top and leave original body wood.
