About once a month I take my strings off of my bass, wax it up, and put on new strings. I recently took my strings off and noticed that the part on the head that you put the string into before winding the string around it (sorry i don't know the name of the part) was loose for the E, A, and G strings. I don't know what i need to do to tighten it because everything seems to be tight. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know what i should do to fix it? Any advice is appreciated.

Is your bass a Warwick? Do you have any pictures you can show of the part that seems to be loose?

Mikey,

Sounds like you are describing the barrel part of the tuning gear. The tip of the string goes straight into the barrel before being wound around it. I have noticed that when there is no string tension the barrels are loose, and this is normal for the Gotoh style tuners. It's the string tension that holds the barrels tight.

FWIW,

Omar

Yeh... I think it's normal that the barrels are loose when there is no string tension... think it's been like that on all my basses

The same goes for me. If they're loose when there is string tension, I'd get some help or a new tuning mechanism. Otherwise its completely normal.

You guys were right, i just needed to put the strings in. That was kind of embarrassing

Don't sweat the little stuff, Mikey! I freaked out the first time I heard my Warwick rattling... If I'd known about this forum, I'd have asked the same question  ! ~M~
