Well I've been playing for 5 years now. I've got a Yamaha RBX and an Ibanez SR506. The Yamaha sounds like crap in comparison to the Ibanez, but I'd like a 4-stringer. So I'm thinking of picking up either a rockbass, or a cheap Warwick used. My budget's around $800CAN. I don't like P/J style pups, probably because I've only played cheap basses and my Yamaha with them. I'd like active pups as well, or at least active electronics. My style is mostly funk/jazz, lots of slapping and that kind of stuff. So I need some good attack. I've played a few Warwicks and RockBasses at my local dealer, but there was alot there. So it was really hard to choose. Any certain models you suggest I look at?

I'm a fan of Rockbasses, but German-built Warwicks are in another league - so you'll find most of the advice here will be to try and get a used Warwick.
I've got an active corvette Rockbass - I'd recommend it to anyone for the price. I've also got a corvette $$ - which may be within your price range - but I'm not sure how well it does for slapping, due to the size of the pickups. It's very versatile - you could probably use it for any type of music - but the tone is a monster - way out of the price-range IMO - an all-round gigging workhorse. The electrics on both of these basses are hybrid passive/active (passive pups, active EQ) - which is perfect for me
If I were you, I'd try out corvette active Rockbasses vs Warwick active Corvette and Corvette $$ and see what you think.
Other models - like the Streamer, Thumb etc are outside my experience - but you'll need to look for used versions of these to keep in your budget.
At least you'll have good fun trying them out.
