Corvettte FNA or FNA Jazzman

so i just did a search to see what i could come up with, but there didn't seen to be any topics where the tones of the two were described.

Right now i play an active Rockbass Corvette 5. If anyone could do a comparison between the FNA or the FNA Jazzman and my rb 'vette, that would be amazing.

I'm still trying to get into the warwick family, but i'm broke and i found a FNA Jazzman for pretty cheap ($750 US shipped). Plus it's really pretty. i assume that with the humbucker, it will have a deeper sound with more bite?

As far as the Fna Jazzman, it gives a completely different tone than the Rockbass. Rockbass=clean, bright and bassy. Jazzman=raunchy, dry and can get nasal. It's not the deepest in the line up and has an airy, mid dominant tone. The coil switch can make it soft, thin or aggressive and it sounds great in passive mode. With this bass you start off with a nicely balanced piece of quality wood with great electronics that can be changed like some here have done with good results I'm told. And hell yes it's beautiful, a real class act...matter of fact, here's mine yet again.
 
lovely bass, but get some lemon oil on that fingerboard, looks a bit dry!!
 
Oh damn! :oops: :oops: Is my slip showing too? I just lemon oiled it 1 month ago. Guess it's time again, I've just been playing the hell out of it. But you're right, we must have a forum standard! :) I'll get right on it.

Those Ampeg combos are the onll Ampegs I really like. And its definitly my favourite combo amp ever. So powerful and balenced!

I like Jazzmans too...
 
i would have thought an ash body and a humbucker would make it a boomy beast. although, i really like the descrition you gave. so... the FNA doesn't have as much bite and clarity?
 
Hey guys, The reason there is no boominess issues with the Jazzman is because of the passive single coil in the front, the geniuses at Warwick slanted that bad boy in such a way that it juuuuust misses picking up the "boom" frequency and dosen't get in the way while slapping. In fact, if you just pan the front pup alone, it honks with little actual boom. The claity is good, it's just different that my other basses and can get a little brittle sounding in single coil mode but man oh man I love the voice of this bass for Latin, Blues, slap, jazz, rock and walking bass. My Vette for ballads (boom required) and My Thumb for metal and funk. This is the only one of my basses that I like it's passive mode, it takes the harshness out and has a slightly overdriven tone. phew!

the maple top also helps take out some of the boom and makes the sound more balance
 
Hey Doc, I love this thing! Out of all the 2 10 combos I tried it turned out I like the most simple one. No class d power supply, no tubes, just big deep heavy bass. Florin was good enough to let me know that it's not that classic Ampeg tone but I'm playing bass a short time so my taste in equiptment is still developing and I'm still open to new things. Anyway, back on topic :) Get the Jazzman.

can i have some opinions as to whether the bass would sound better if it was a FNA. I thought the FNA would be great for metal and hard rock, but from what gerry said, i'm questioning that. i'd love a thumb, but those are extremely hard to find for less than $800 US and i'm pretty much broke right now. thanks for the help.
 
Let me be the first to make it a point that I don't gig :cry: I play studio and at home so I can only comment on how my basses behave in certain situations. I just watched your band and I swear you guys make me want to be in a band! That looks like so much fun and you guys are very good! I would listen to that on the radio. The Jazzman in parallel could do it but a Thumb would be perf......wait my Vette st. is a monster and could do it for less $ than a Thumb. Hey! Some of you working musicians speak up please!
 
i'd say get the jazzman. much less expensive than a thumb and still sounds amazing, and its really really versitile - it can do most things.

pretty much anything you want it will be able to do and if you want that FNA sound you can always pan fully to the bridge pickup (i know the pickups are dfferent though - FNA has twin j, jazzman has humbucker)
 
thanks everyone. i'm going to start saving up for the FNA jazzman, but i'll keep my eyes out for a thumb. more opinions would be cool, and thanks to those who complimented my band.
