For the past two years, my main gigging rig has been an EA iAmp Micro 300 run through a Schroeder Mini 12R (4ohm) cab. Very small, very light and rather polite in terms of sheer earth-shaking volume. But for a theatre musician, no big deal.
The past couple of months have had me move away from my "one size fits all" rig into a dedicated "smaller amp for rehearsals or with a small group" and a "bigger amp for performances, or places with no DI support." With that, the EA bid a fond farewell as I looked for a bigger amp. Bass Central in FL had a deal on a demo unit of the ProFet 5.2 head, so I figured that I'd give it a shot.
Got it today, and plugged it into the Schroeder cab when I got home. When I originally got the Schro, I had heard how earth-shaking these little cabinets were, and to be honest, with the EA amp I just didn't buy it. With the ProFet, I can really see how these little cabs can kill by themselves.
Make no mistake, the amp is fantastic. It's very true to what I hear when running my basses direct at church. Moved the contour knob around to see what it can do; with it full-bore I could almost hear my old GK amp head. Nice!
So in summation, color me impressed. This amp is going to stick around for a bit (which I'm sure that comment will have my wife saying "Of course it will" and rolling her eyes).
