Cocobolo

What kind of sound does this wood produce. I was looking around the wood section of the custom shop and fell in love with the way it looks. I just wondered what kind of sound it produces.

I've never seen Cocobolo used as an instrument body, but I have yet to see a set of Claves that are made of something other than Cocobolo. It's a very hard wood with a beautiful grain indigenous to my native country (Costa Rica), but I've never seen a piece of it big enough to make a bass body without multiple laminations. It definitely has the density (mass) to make a serious instrument body, but its resonant characteristics might be such as to reinforce higher frequencies rather than lower.

Our global community could have contrasting opinions,

i found a picture of a Pedulla Bass made of it. it looks very nice.



i figure it is rare to have a bass made of one such wood, because i have only seen a few others.

She's a hottie! :D

I wonder how she sounds with that maple neck and the cocobolo wings which based on Escobon's description should lend more to high frequency response...

hope she's not just a pretty face :wink:
 
Alembic use cocobolo a lot on their basses - it gives a very tight but resonant bottom end - and it looks gorgeous! I have a cocobolo fingerboard on my Overwater 4 string and have never regretted it!

cocobolo,ebony & purpleheart are alembic standards almost,but then they are 3 of the best woods in necks imo.
 
yeah man, cool wood.

My BASS teacher has got 1 in cocobolo, not a Warwick, i think it is a yamaha.

Hvem lærer du hos og hvor? Min lærer er ikke bassist, med klassisk guitarist. Det kunne være rart at lære fra en bassist...
