Check this out... JD thumb.... with a streamer body shape...

So look at this... I think July 1986 JD thumb, all looks kosher... then you see the body shape.... it's like an early streamer... and the control layouts.... what on earth is going on? Anyone know anything? My guess it's some custom one off.
 
To me it looks like the upper body wing has been replaced

the bottom horn is too long aswell as the wrong shape.
also with the thumb's construction wouldn't it have to be both wings replaced?
 
Beat me to it Luke!! See if anyone knows much about it ;). AFAIK Thumbs have a 3 piece Bubinga top, so in theory the top and bottom sections could have been replaced leaving the rest stock. However a lot of hassle if it was actually done!
 
Mail Warwick with a pic? Or one of the mods can help out? Never seen this shape...
 
I asked HP, so it is possible that the bass was made by us this way, but he is not sure...
 
So it is a Thumb neck blank used with a SSII body construction/template but with Thumb woods?
 
This looks completly original to me, but I really think this would be a 'one-off' I highly doubt there are more of these out there!
 
If this is a real Warwick I could imagine the factory wants it for the museum?
 
this is probably the reason why the thumb has a small body! looks like all original to me:)
 
I am aware that these are my first two posts but would like to say I am 51 years old and have owned many warwicks over the years.
A 1985 jd thumb bass
a 1991 dolphin pro1 5 string
a 1992 streamer
a buzzard bass (forgot year)
and about four other thumbs including a fretless bolt on six string.
with the exception of an alembic I have owned everything from status,fender,overwater,wal,tobias,gibson (yeah I know),jd,steinberger,
current basses are the "strange thumb",a 1990 thumb and a fretless wal custom.
So I know a genuine warwick when I see one guys.
I have passed ten photographs of the bass and electronics on to Tordis Glass at Warwick who is going to see if he can shed some light on its origin for me.

I can't imagine this is fake in any way.... I'd just love to know its provenance!

No I bought it.
It was in a local shop a woman brought her deceased husbands basses in to sell.
The shop bought them and called me (as they know I have extensive knowledge of warwicks )
 
Ah, I see. Please do us a favour and post the pictures you sent to Warwick! I'd personally love to see it, and I think many others would too.

i'm loving the little pic in your profile anyway comparing it and your other thumb - so different- but looks so good too! What is the preamp- is it just the same but without the stacked knob?
