He is 100% correct about bassist's losing groove when soloing. I've seen so many good players that are really tight when playing with their band but the second they are up to do a bass solos oh boy it's just bad and even I slow interest. Even when they're really skilled all they do is play scales as fast as possible.

What I usually do is use a loop pedal, capture a groove and it just keeps repeating and I just improvise over it. Even when playing at a Death metal show when I'm just doing a simple Motown/Funk groove and let the loop play while doing different improves over it; slap, tapping, scales whatever everybody gets a kick out of it because as Andy says it stays within the groove. Doesn't matter the type of music people wanna groove.
