Cheap strings

So I have a dilemma. I love the sound of new strings, and since I got my streamer, I play every day for 3 or so hours. This is wonderful and my songwriting is improving exponentially, but my strings die quickly... like... They lose the new sound (I really like it for harmonics and tapping, etc) in about a month or less. They are still good strings, but I really like them to be bright. I use nickle strings because they seem to hold the tone longer.

I need some cheap ones or some that will last a long time because I'm a broke college student and can't keep dropping $40 for strings. Any suggestions?
 
I'm under the impression that stainless steel strings are much brighter and stay bright much longer than nickel strings. When I think of nickel strings I think of warmth, with any brightness wearing off fairly quickly...
 
I've recently found my self in a string dilemma. I found that steel strings are
brighter but they will kill the fullness of your sound. I have personally found
that steel strings stay bright for a month or so then just die. My basses that
have nickel strings on them have more of snap sound instead of a clink
sound. They definitely last way longer and they fade off instead of just die
like the steel strings do. Nickel strings have a far more full sound as well.

I have strung two of my basses (both of the NT thumbs) with the two
different strings. One got the nickels and one got the steel strings. You can A
vs. B much better than that. I would stick with the nickel strings and maybe
try a different brand. DR makes two different kinds of nickel strings. One is
hex core (low rider nickels) and one is round core (sun beams). Rounds are
more flexible.

These are just my observations from my own perfect string finding
adventure.
 
Probably. Anything with his name on it costs a lot plus a testicle.

i have this piece of paper that has his name on it. I'll sell it to you for $400.
 
Wow... really... hmmm... I take it for $500. $400 is just insulting for a piece of paper with thee Jonas Hellborg's name on it.
 
I haven't ordered them yet, but Trujo777 talked me into trying the EMP's.
he says he's had a set on for about 10 months now with no noticable lack in sound quailty. around $40 a set for the 4 stringers
 
Cheap isn't always the best value.
EMPs are excellent and last a long time, so they work out cheaper than "cheap" strings. Just one thing to bear in mind... the initial cost is a bit steep if you buy them and then decide you don't like them.
I don't use anything else!

sounds like my type of strings! I'd like to try the EMPs, but I just can't justify the price at this point. especially since I'm not gigging right now.

You can find 'em even for cheaper.
I always buy D'Addario XL on Ebay.com, 24 $ each two pack
 
I am playing elixir-strings on my basses and guitars. I like their sound, their feeling and their long brilliance. The downside it the price. Paying ~50 Euro per set is alot, but their lifetime is longer than those I have tried before.
 
EMPs last about 5-8 months in my experience and for £35 for a string that lasts that long i think is probably the cheapest.

That or i play stadium elites, about £15 a pack last pretty well maybe 2 months, and i reallt like their tone, even though that are a cheapo string.
 
I put EMPS on my basses about 10 months ago and still sound as good as when new. I used to tear a set in 3 months so maybe paying a little extra for EMPs but getting at least 3 times the life out of them is worth to me.

just MY opinion.

+ 1 on Elites.

They are bloody good for the money - £15 for a 4 string set and I'm sure you could probably hunt around and get a better price.

I've still got packs from years ago that I use and they sound just dandy!

Back in their day, they were used by all the biggies - Stuart Zender, Mark King, Nathan East, Randy Hope Taylor....check em out

I always go for Dean Markley Blue Steels, found them on an ebay shop for about £16 and they tend to last about 3 months depending on how much you play.

I just wanna extend to all you all my deepest sympathies.

Fortunately, I happen to like old strings and bolt-on necks.

I prefer spray-booth gloss poly to a hand rubbed oil finish.

I even like the sound of poplar and basswood bodies.

I am such a 'cheap date'. ` ` ` ` ` ` :-)
