Can someone identify this fretboard?

2001 Warwick Custom Shop Thumb Bolt-On, Active - eBay (item 260580519750 end time Apr-04-10 14:00:26 PDT)

ok, I can only give a link to the completed auction (photobucket is making this computer lockup), but there's a pic there in the link. The seller didn't seem to know much about Warwicks. Tried to sell it as bubinga/wenge at first, saying the previous owner told her it was custom shop, bubinga body and ebony fretboard. However, it does look like the fingerboard is ebony and not wenge so there could be some truth to that.

Can someone confirm this for me?
 
LOL oh my god you're right! It has that thin maple veneer separating the top and bottom! I'm frickin giddy with excitement. I got this bass for 800 bucks. What a steal!
 
yep, I found it with the item code before you updated the link :) btw, it doesn't really look like it, but When I posted "Warwick Basses Amps & Rock'n Roll" in my post, that's actually a link to the bass I think you're buying. According to that, it has an Ebony Fretboard
 
Yes, if you look at the pictures the fretboard is black, not the wenge color. Then there's the line going around the side which is the maple separating the ovangkol back from the bubinga pommele' top. It says there were only 150 made, making them one of the "rarest and most prized Warwicks ever made". LOL, what a score! Thanks for the help!

Seriously tho.There's alot rarer & most prized is a description I like to steer clear of.After all,the most prized can be anything,to anyone.
I sense you have a question,you may not have thought of it yet,but I know for sure,you WILL think of it ;)

Actually, *I* don't say anything, that was quoted directly from the Warwick site. But thanks for the assumption.

It's obviously worth more than a reg bolt on, being as it has a bubinga pommele top, ebony fretboard, signed headstock, I believe also a metal plate indicating it's a ltd. Not to mention it's the first ltd series they made and there were 150 made. So I think it being more valuable is a no brainer. Though nothing seems to be worth much these days. It's an exciting stroke of good luck when I almost never have any lol.
 
It was the first "official" LTD.
Previous years produced other "non official" LTD's in smaller numbers.The 2000 Infinity LTD,or Vampyre LTD are good examples.They're numbered,signed,came new with all the LTD documentation,but not listed on the website.
There's been several 2001 LTD's sell here & ebay for roughly the same money as a regualr Thumb bo,sometimes even cheaper.ime ymmv
Ya dead right about nothing being worth much these days.It's great for bargain hunters,but sucks for anyone that buys new,only to run into money troubles later on,& have to sell.

Well, I'm not buying this to make money off of in the future. Wenge neck NT's are going for 1200, for example. It's still going to be very special to me, though. It's like my 78 Les Paul custom, just found it by good luck and it's still my most prized posession today (and what a SWEET sounding and playing guitar). It seems like with this mix of woods I might get a unique sound, or the best of both worlds. I'll post some before/after pics because it needs a bit of TLC. LOL what a score! :d
 
Do you actually have the bass in your possession Soundstorm? The only reason I ask is that no matter how much I stare at the enlarged image on the eBay listing I can't see any join between the front and back of the bass as you describe; obviously if you have the bass in your possession then you will be able to see that the front and back are different woods with the sandwich splice in the centre but I can't! :lol:

The body wood also doesn't look particularly like pommele from the eBay pic but then again it may well be different when you clean and polish it. ;)

It'd be nice to see a few shots of the bass when it's had some tlc.
 
I have some better pics the seller sent me before I bought it. You can clearly see the maple veneer line in those pics, I can't post those pics cuz I'm on my iPhone. The top is pretty dirty and full of smudges, but I'm sure she'll look much better once I sand I wax it. It's not the most exotic looking bubinga pommele grain though, and that's another reason why it's kind of hard to tell.
 
A question on sanding/cleaning: they say you're supposed to sand with the grain, but what about between pups, knobs, etc...?

To do the job you'll need to strip the bass right down, inc removing the bridge, pups and controls so sanding with the grain between the knobs etc. isn't an issue. Do NOT be tempted to 'sand' (I hope you aren't actually going to use rough sandpaper to attack the bass!) the bass with the pups/bridge/pots etc. still in place; i) you will make a rubbish job of it. ii) you'll get all sorts of dust and stuff in the controls and they'll end up gritty and scratchy in absolutely no time.
 
I was going to remove the strings and tape the rest up. I was going to use a scotch brite first, and if it needed more, go to a 600 grit or something like that.

I have no experience removing pots, bridges, and pups from a guitar and am afraid I'd mess it up tring to put it all back.
 
Are the pots and pickups soldered in? Will I need to readjust the bridge after putting it back on? Pickup height? How easy is it to strip the wood when screwing the bridge back down?

These are my concerns.
 
I haven't found a good thread on this subject yet. And have I searched!

I think in bursts like that lol,

but I really need some good instruction because I'll be mad as a hornet if I screw that bass up
