OMGWTF BBQ! that's awesome!
I have seen a similar effect with sandblasted ash that then has colour applied then lightly sanded off.....but charred bass under a satin finish LE DREWL.
What's the cheapest wick you can get with an ash body? any rock basses? could be a nice home refinish job for someone with patience and a blowtorch. (ie not me, as I have little patience an amnot allowed near blowtorches for the safety of m self and those around me)
I'm pretty sure that Ritter wasn't torched but stained and then sanded. I've used the torch method on Ash a few times... and on bass cabs too (made of marine-grade plywood) with good results. No real way to harm the wood as you only need a few seconds of exposure to make the grain black, not enough to warp the blank.
