Bluray disc suggestions

I moved about 6 weeks ago, got me own place, just me and the cats. I got a 1080P Samsung 40" LCD a few weeks back, and just yesterday received a Bluray player (Sony) I ordered off Amazon. I've been using a Pioneer upscaling DVD player for the past couple of weeks, but really wanted the Bluray since the TV is full HD.

I remember a thread a while back about widescreen TV's and a lot of people on this forum seem to be into home theater. I am looking for suggestions for Bluray discs that really highlight the format. I have close to a thousand DVD's and have no intention of replacing them all. But if the Bluray is a lot better and the film is worth it I sure will replace. I've ordered a bundle of the 2 Narnia films from Amazon but it's backordered, I'll get it at the end of January, but for 32 bucks for both films I'll suffer the wait. Any others you guys think Bluray is the only way to go? Many thanks for any and all suggestions.
 
Sorry i can't help that much i download most of my films, and tv shows in a mix of subscriptions and other shadier methods.

That said though, i watched serenity in 1080p a while ago and that was really nice, but i really like firefly and serenity.

I'd imagine transformers being really impressive on blu ray, as well its one of those films with lots of special effects and big robots. Rambo was another one that one of my mates mentioned is really worth watching on blu ray.

Other than that i'd suggest your favorite films.
 
The Dark Knight and Iron Man sure do wonders to show off the Blu Ray qualities.
 
+1 on Dark Knight, Transformers, Iron Man, The Hulk, & Pirates of the Caribbean.

I wanna get me a PS3 to get the Blue Ray player and a game console in 1 :wink: maybe this summer. :wink:
 
Thanks for the ideas guys, I don't like the controls for the Playstations, so I got a BDP on its own. Looking forward to getting it going.

This movie in full hd is simply... stunning!
I really love the idea of full HD-Movies on big big screens - but for me it's not the time to buy any blueray stuff, yet.
A few more years (1-2, max.3) and bluerays will be far more accepted, hence cheaper. I don't see any reason to buy a movie for 30€ instead of 8-15€ only because of any blueray features and full hd.
 
I'm not into movies, however, I do know that there is a lot of garbage on Blu-Ray out there. Stuff that's just almost copy-pasted from DVD. So I'd suggest that if you want to experience true Blu-Ray quality, you'd might want to check out reviews in Hi-Fi magazines and stuff..........Good luck, and enjoy !!! :D
 
I haven`t got a BluRay myself, but my dad just got a Denon BD-player, and it just took regular DVD`s to a new level. They looked real stunning.

I don`t buy DVD`s anymore, rather saving up for a BD-player or a computer with a BD-player.

Iron Man is really worth seeing on BD.
 
I've been hearing Iron Man as an audition quality disc a few times, I got the SD DVD for less than 15 bucks so I could justify replacing it, got a friend who aint got it at all so I could give the plain DVD to her. Be going shopping on Saturday for a few.
 
Blade Runner

Blade Runner. The restoration they did to put it in BD deserves to be seen. Also, there are 4 other versions of the film on the pack.
 
Cars. I know it's a kids film, but earlier this year Panasonic included it free along with Ratatouille in their Blu-ray player, and my word I couldn't believe what I saw. You just can't believe they would draw in that much detail. Two good films too.

Otherwise something like Transformers or Iron Man would be ideal.

From what I can see at the moment people I would say that Panasonic would be the ideal tv to buy. Anything out of the PX80 range. I haven't had to pick up a single one for repair. Saying that it's the same with Sony, but the Pana has the better picture and is easier to use. They are also at the head for Blu-ray and dvd or hard drive recorders. I know Panasonic can be that little bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Actually they also recently released a Blu-ray surround system. Very nice.

In case any of you are wondering, my job is installing these items in peoples houses. So if any one is looking to buy then please feel free to get in touch.

My best bit of advice though is don't skimp on leads if you have a new lcd or plasma. Because the picture is sharper it shows up the poorness of the lead. Buy a mid ranged scart lead for everything except a video player, and use an hdmi where possible.

ps. I'm not on commission I hate selling stuff.
 
Hi guys, I checked out The Dark Knight, that is one seriously amazing film, and the video and sound are incredible. The manual for the BDP is awful. Seems all the defaults are either you're playing with a full Chiro or Macintosh system, or a victrola. It's either set for total high end, or boom box. I understand the preset would be for HDMI audio, but setting it to coaxial still delivered a pro logic output from the receiver, the manual is long, with no index. I had to tell it to put out digital audio. Took forever to get it playing right with my system. When it did, the picture and sound are amazing. At least on Dark Knight.

As an experiment I picked up Stargate for 10 bucks, great film, in this case the DVD is better than the Bluray. The noise floor on the BD is about as bad as VHS a lot of the time. Shame, because the scenes where the noise is low are tremendous. Just a careless transfer. It did it's job mind you. Little test to see if it's worth replacing my current DVD collection to much of a degree, it seems the answer is no. The video off The Punisher DVD upscaled is better. I got that for 5 bucks, so I'll still be raiding the dump bin. :D

Seems the cheapie BD's aren't worth getting unless you don't have the film, and in that case a cheap DVD is still probably better. The good BD's are amazing. I've yet to check out a DVD upscaled on the BDP, will do that soon. Got Pan's Labyrinth also on BD yesterday, will check that out tonight. Tried to find Iron Man on BD, everywhere was sold out. I did order Batman Begins and I Am Legend, should have those soon. Both were 18 bones from Amazon which is way below the price in stores. In fact that'll likely be my main source.

I had to laugh the other night when on I watched Big Trouble in Little China and it said it was also available to watch in HD.
 
Prolly the same deal as Stargate, on an HD disc, but not an HD picture. Pan's Labyrinth was awesome BTW. It's only in 7.1, so the coax would only give a pro-logic output, but it was hardly noticeable. Not your average pro-logic soundtrack, plus I'm getting a 7.1 receiver today, ordered it from Amazon.

One thing I did find is that you need to find an HDMI labeled HDMI 1.3. That will handle 10 plus gig per second. I spent 80 bucks on a Monster HDMI 5 weeks ago, that'll only do 4 gigs (got it for upscaled DVD), so now I have the BluRay the Monster's almost useless. I checked Wally World yesterday, I can get a Phillips HDMI 1.3 for 35 bucks that does the job. I just have to ensure I get the correct lengths. I need 2. The receiver arrived yesterday, it's the true monster. True HD, 7 X 110 watt channels, every processor you can think of, Faroudja upscaler ( great for the Wii).

Oh, I don't use some wussicated surge protector on this rig boils and ghouls. C'mon, I'm a Warwick playing gear head. This rig runs through a Furman Rack Rider power conditioner. My best bit of advice, get one, lifetime warranty and coverage of 1 million on your gear. Also way cheaper than a decent surge protector.
 
I bought a PS3 yesterday....ummm....for my son. Yeah, that's it. My first flick pick was "Hancock" and both the picture and sound was amazing. Thanks for the advise about the hdmi cord. I'll have to make sure I've got the best one possible. BTW, my old Monster surge protector actually worked the other day. I woke up in darkness but all of my gear was fine. Friggin outlet was melted too!
 
Monster products are expensive for a reason.

The best advice I will give for your tv's: if any of you have panels, DO NOT USE POLISH to clean the screens. You'll destroy it. It's ok to polish the glass tube sets but not new tv's. Monster cleaner. Once again it's expensive at £20 a bottle, but you can use it on laptops, tv's, glass, and it'll last probably two years. So it's actually worth the price.
