It all started around Sunday morning, my parents and I left for a 4 day vacation at Myrtle Beach, with the culmination of it ending with a 311 show.
The first day, kinda was a bore. My mother went shopping all over the "hot spots", which were the malls, outlet malls, flea markets, Barefoot Landing (where's the concert would be held days later), and Broadway.
On the positive side, I did buy myself PRS fingerboard cleaner, a Carpo (the thing you can hold down the strings on your bass/guitar), and a pack of Rotos 66 5 stringers. I was able to try out the carpo thingy on a 5 string Peavy Cirrus bass, and it sounded not like the normal, for I am too use to the passive aggressiveness of my Rickenbacker and standard growl from my Thumb and Corvettes. Never the less, it sounded interesting. It had a lot of its over active bit, but being use to a more natural growl, I was displeased with the electronics and pups. The bass and Treble pots were reversed and took me a little while longer to get the tone I wanted/could bestly get from this bass. But other than that, the bass was great. It had an an awesome feel, and it didn't weigh too heavy.
After that, we headed to an all you can eat sea food restaurant, the rest of the night I just sat back at the motel and crashed.
Monday. I had breakfast, did an hour of jogging/power walking/what ever, and went into the theaters to see the third installment of Jackass in 3D!
This movie was awesome, and the 3D glasses made it felt like you were actually in the movie with these nut balls. I saw it around noon, and I was pretty much the only one there. Except, a guy and his family came in around middle of the movie to watch it. When I say a guy and his family, I mean a guy and his wife, and his baby and his 8 year old daughter. This is not the movie to take your kids to. It's a wild and crazy mature movie. You will see male genitals in this movie, and this guy brings his wife and kids to see Chris Pontius whack a ping pong ball with his dong and sends the ball into Bam Margera's mouth. Okay, it didn't go in, it just brushed against Bam's lips.
Anyways, besides that weirdness, the movie was awesomely funny. Sean William Scott has a small cameo in the movie. That's all I'm saying. You see the trailer, there's much more crazy stuff than that.
After the movie, I hung out (most of the day) with my cousin and his friend. Both of them are musicians, guitarists mostly (I don't know much about the other guy, but I know my cousin can play piano and some drums as well). So, we spent most of the day joking around, smoking the finest herb, and jamming to all kinds of songs. It really helped me out to find someone who likes Metal (well, not the new stuff).
Later that night, I spent my time at bars drinking beer and watching Football, well... what Americans, such as myself, call it by.
I woke up Tuesday morning with a hangover. Still, I had breakfast and did my daily jog for an hour. I went fishing on one of the piers. I caught a few fish during the couple of hours there. I ended up tossing them back, as you need a fishing license to keep the fish, and I did not have one for that.
After that, I stopped by a local comic book shop. Yes, I am very much a comic book geek by heart. I ended up buying the hardback graphic novels of the Ultimatum and Ultimate Avengers #2. I also found a good bit of Eastman and Laird's Ninja Turtles comics to bridge in some of my Turtles gap I have of their original idea of the Turtles.
I left there and something hit me... I just remembered of all the things I had packed, and the ticket for the concert wasn't one of them. I thought about driving all the way back home and back to the beach (which is a total of 4 to 5 hours), or buy another ticket, which is about the same to re-fill the gas tank if went back for said ticket.
I bought another ticket, and went drinking, again at another bar called Senor Frogs. They had a special $2 Tuesday night, and I wanted to party some more. Jello Shots, big ass drinks, and ladies dancing on the dance floor. What's not to love about that?
And Wednesday came. The whole waking up, getting breakfast, and the jog with another hangover was eminent. The concert was tonight, and I was ready. My parents deiced to give a gift, which I told them I didn't need anything. Because you see... The past Friday was my birthday, and they asked me if I wanted some pants or shoes and I declined. So, somehow I ended up with 3 pairs of shoes and a Rush shirt of the Power Windows album. My dad found two places that had deals on shoes. One had the buy one and the second one half off. That is where the first two come in. The only was in another store that sold outdoorsy clothes and shoes, which had the best deal of buy one get two more FREE. Yep. Free.
I two skateboarder esque shoes, one slip on, and a slip on leather loafers.
My mother wanted to stop at Kohl's, so we did... then we walked out 30 minutes later and our cars wasn't there. Apparently, we got jack. Or so we thought, there are two entrances into and out of Kohl's. The car was parked on the other side. We got lucky. I was thinking at the time, if the car was stolen, I just lost another ticket, because I thought it would be safer for me to remember where it is by leaving it in the car. And I'm glad the car wasn't stolen, and I didn't have to buy a third ticket.
Then it was wine and dine at Hooters. It wasn't really wine, just beer. Beer and hot wings... the girls in those tight tank tops and short shorts. I had a couple comment on liking my shirt (It was a Pantera shirt with well, the green herb of life on it). I wasn't sure if they liked the band, or just though I was someone who knew how to have a good time. I smile and chatted a for a minute. I even walked outside with one of the waitresses, and shared some of the herb I had on me behind the building (I am so glad my cousin gave me a little extra for the later).
Besides the nice appearance, I found the knowledge inside the waitress a little... empty. So, you can say, whatever or whoever's number I gave was certainly not mine. Besides I don't do long distance relationships, either. If it's more than an hour, hell no. Gas isn't cheap.
Then I guess I waited in line for the show to start. Beer isn't cheap, and definitely not inside of the House of Blues. When it costs you around $5.00 for a 12 oz. beer, then you know something's wrong. Also, they didn't pat anyone down. I walked up to the enterance and all that happened with the security guard was this:
Guard: Do you have any concealed weapons on you?
Me: No.
Guard: Move along.
That's it. No pat down or metal detectors like they did before when I saw all of the crazy death metal bands here. They most have came to the conclusion that 311 fans might be just non-aggressive. I don't know really. I think they are just getting lazy now.
A local band called "The Movement" opened for 311, and these guys actually didn't suck. They're some kind of reggae band, but sounded good and had great showmanship.
And then 311 came in and open with "What Was I Thinking?", they played only a few songs off Uplifter like Never Ending Summer and, Hey You, Jackpot. And like how they do it, they all had a two minute jam on the drums with Tim at one point banging out some tiny cymbals. The show ended with Pnut doing a solo on his 10 string Streamer, before they came back with a few more songs and closing the encore out with "Creatures (For a While)".
I have to say, Pnut's tone sounded awesome. He was using the Hellborg Rig, I noticed 2 2x10s and 2 1x15? I think. He had a pedal board or something, couldn't see it quiet good, but one thing got me... during sound check, the bass tech was playing a fretless bass of his. I had my head turned, but when I looked back to see what was mawah-ing, the tech guy turned around and put it behind the curtain. It sorta looked Thumb-ish, but if anyone here can tell me they can make a Pnut III bass sound like a fretless, I'd like to hear it.
I walked out of the concert with a wristband and a 311 shirt. I went back to the hotel for one last time and well...
Thursday. Basically got the hell out of there and drove back home, where I spent the next 12 hours back on the job. Now, I'm home writing this little thing, which probably no one gives two $#%!s about, but the hell with it...
I know you just wish you were me, :d
