Bass only ?

While surfing on da Youboob I came across these vidz:

Besides lotz of other "bass only" vidz (?) of several different other (famouz) bandz and playerz, there's also a huge
collection of "vocalz/geetard/etc...only" available. There's also vidz that on which ya hear everything BUT da bass (or
da geetard/vocalz)....
Anywayz, I find these vidz very helpful for da practising and stuff...ya can precisely figure out
how/wut da original player did on da particular song, and even wut effectz he used (and where and when)...8:

My question iz : does anybody know how these "vidz" were made ? Is there maybe a (free ) computer program that
does this trick ? ...

Well i don't know how these particular vidz were made but there are so many options ranging from real simple to terribly complicated, it all depends on how much time and resources you have really

Onwindows systems there is MS Moviemaker (back in the XP days the Moviemaker version was quite good so you could feed camera of webcam input direct into MMK and use a line input to 'catch' the line signal from your instrument)
next on there are proprietary video editing tools like Adobe premiere, Magix movie editing, pinnacle studio you name it.

Basically these vidz all use video- and adio streams separately. only the real simple (and cheap) editing tools stream video and audio both without hassles.

bottom line is: there is no real simple way that i know off, it all costs much time and money to make a good Vid!

another answer to your question, i guess many bassists do more then just bass, i my self play also guitar and fiddle around on a keyboard, only the singing bit won't come of the groud, it always sounds silly to me so i guess i will not publish any singing bit on the net

I dunno, Rob. It's almost as if someone has access to the raw recording tracks. And on the Metallica song, there's no bleed-through of instruments at all which happens to all "unmixed" isolation tracks I've ever heard (you can pick some of it up in the Tool tune).

Pretty cool stuff.

I agree with Doc, it´s like "raw" instrument tracks of the recordings. There is a few software that allows you to "isolate" music from vocals, or to "delete" bass lines from a record, but those youboob samples sound like original tracks to me.

At least when Metallica gave their songs for Guitar Hero, some of the original masters leaked. So that led to the remixed songs as "...and justice for jason" with the bass tracks mixed up front in the mix.

These are cool .. thanks for sharing. Couple interesting things with the Rush one for example, you can hear some bleed from the drum tracks, also at times like the major bass fills the sound of the track completely changes. It almost sounds like it was punched in and recorded hotter to make the fill standout more, but I don't know. Listening to the Metallica I just kept thinking if this was a program or one of thoses isolation effects units, damn it was a really good job. If its an actual track, then it's definately off the final mixdown. Whatever, Their really cool and I agree, could be very helpful in learning and practicing the songs.

Another interesting thing I noticed with Geddy's, you can really hear the strings hitting the pickups. He plays very hard and I have read Russ Ryan (his former tech) saying that Ged like the pups set as high as possible and that it was always a percarious balance between how high you can get them compared to how much the strings hit them. and you can really hear it on this track. pretty cool
