Look what I found on youtube:

This guy has a point...

Yeah that vid made quite a bit of sense.
One of my main bug bears is my finger individuality... If you get what I mean?!
I've been doing the "Epileptic Spider" as a warm up to increase movement for my individual fingers but although initially I found my hand and fingers to ache a little they've now started to hurt. :?

I think I'll take his advice onboard. It's more logical.
Why didn't I see this earlier?

My left hand is stil hurting from last nights practise as well...

Thanks for bringing this to my attention Florin! I greatly appreciate it!

Another piece of good advice is if it starts tyo hurt take a break till it feels better (usually 5-10 mins)

Another handy hint is that if you are a beginner and are at the 1234 excerise stage; use a light or medium gauge of string [35 - 100] 0r [40 - 105]. A lot of bass players who want to rock go immediatley for the heavy gauge of strings and then strain themselves. Keep it simple, get the strength in your fingers up, then rock!

I think if you are doing anything that hurts you should stop doing it instead of repeating it every few minutes.

Im talking about more of an aching not something i get often but occasionally if im playing chords on my six after i while of that the muscle between thumb and index aches a bit so i take a break and then its fine after.

very helpful stuff... i also watched his other bass playing habits bit.

a must bookmark link

Very good point, but sooner or later your gonna have to spread those fingers. Plus there are a lot of people including me who neglect using their little finger. So I say to all beginners, use your little finger as much as possible.

Yes - it's a good vid.

;)

He's not saying don't do the 1234 exercise - he's saying start somewhere comfortable around the middle of the neck, and gradually work your way back towards the first position (over a period of time, not in a single session).

Even when I'm warming up now, I start in the middle of the neck and loosen up in a comfortable area before I work back to the first fret.

Wow, this was among the first lessons/excercises a bass player I know showed me. It worked like a charm for hand strength. Marks also has an awesome afro.
