@sprocket, could you tell me what kind of bass/tuning you are referring to? Also, I'm curious what kind of sound/genre of music you would like to use it for.

Most of the time I hear bass players complaining about (metal) guitarists tuning too low, these days. Tuning a bass higher than standard tuning could be a great payback! ;-)
 
@ Grindcore : It s tuned an octave higher , same EADG but with smaller string gauge .

@sprocket, thanks for the info. I had found the wiki already, but I wasn't sure if you were planning on tuning an octave higher. The video sounds cool, too. The different string gauge/scale length results in a quite 'jazzy' sound in this example. Not your typical 'jazzy bass sound,' but more like jazz guitar.

I'm not sure if I could play this type of instrument very well, as I'm used to having more than four strings, hahaha! You see, my main instrument is actually guitar, not bass. I like a lot of non-standard tunings, though. Hopefully, I'll own an 8 string guitar some day... ;-)

If you need thinner strings that are long enough for a bass guitar, you could try Circle K Strings. I've heard good things about them, although I haven't used them myself.
 
Hey thanx Grindcore , It s more of a solo instrument on my side , you need another bassist with a piccolo bass ! lol

I string my Dolphin E-C. While I use normal tuning, with 26 frets and 5 strings it gives me almost the range of a 4 string piccolo, without compromising the standard bass range.
 
Cool Da-Vonk , got it covered with my 6 stringers also . It s some alternatives but not as crazy as Michael Manring s .
 
To be honest I thought it had something to do with a shorter scale, and not one octave higher... Thanks for the videos guys, I really like the piccolo sound.
 
Yes! I currently string my Thumb Dirty Blonde as piccolo (though two full steps down from regular guitar tuning; C - F - Bb - Eb). I find it fun and useful for writing guitar parts for my songs.

Cool ! Didn t know it was strung that way mate ! Must be great right ! The sound must be great on a bass like this one .

I have 4 basses strung Piccolo ( with the same GHS .018 - .050), one Acoustic, one Dobro, a Beatle Bass and a Washburn Doubleneck.
It's mainly to play guitar parts, or double some bass lines.
I must say that I fell like I'm litterally plyain the piccolo and working with the basses.
They're great instruments, especially for some Heavy Metal riffs as the Long Scale and rather heavy gauges give a great deep tone.
 
So I guess my 8-string now counts as two basses, one regular and one piccolo. ;)
