Just recorded a couple of songs with one of my bands and I would really like some feedback (especially on the bass line). The instrument I used was a mid-range Ibanez but the next recording will be with my "new" Warwick Streamer '84 (No. 22) so stay tuned :P.

P.S: Please note that these are not the final versions of the songs (the mastered versions haven't been made public) so any frequency discrepancy has (most likely) been solved.

Vocals sound very dry and are sitting too loud in the mix for my taste. Where is the bass?

Lowest end seems to have been cut off completely by some sort of EQ?
My Adam subwoofer switches on automatically when frequencies below 84hz enter the mix. With your 4 songs it decided to stay off. Still, a lot of domestic speaker systems go no lower then 60hz so the mix should sound good on those speakers too. I am afraid the low end is not coming through on those kind of speakers but then again I'm no expert.

I will play the songs again tomorrow at higher volume. For now this is what I noticed technically. Musically the songs are very interesting!
 
Unfortunately the EQ was indeed not properly done. The mastered version sounds tighter but all the low end had to be somewhat "artificially" inflated. I was not present at the mixing process but not having anything below 84hz is really strange. I know some hard limiting has been done on the drums and keyboard (everything under 100hz has been stripped out) but this is all I was aware of.

So there's no sub 100 frequencies on the drums and keyboard at all? That seems weird. What was the reasoning for that?
 
Weird indeed, coz the bass drum should be well below 100 :)
 
I'm not entirely certain on the drums but the keyboards certainly had the lows cut for Homeless as the effect used covered up everything. I've only received some biased information on the mixing process. Anyway...everyone involved in the producing process agreed that there should definitely be more low end in future recordings.

On the other hand...it's not that bad, right?:(
 
Ahh...I know...but the whole thing was done in such a rush that I barely remember my own recording session. The mixes have been sent for mastering in the US and the final track sound somewhat more balanced. A clip will be filmed in May (for Samurai Katagi most likely) so hopefully mixing mishaps will be compensated through visual effects :P.
 
Relax. Most of this can be fixed by mastering. I'd excite the stereo imaging a wee bit and multiband compress just the middle using a mid/side plugin to get those vocals more 'in' the mix instead of on top of it. Then buff up the lows using that same multiband compressor and maybe top it off with some EQ on the normal stereo signal. I am no real mastering engineer but have done some budget masters for local projects so I know a thing or two but nothing really special.

Sadly I didn't get to listen to the mixes today as the wife had me fixing up the interior and lighting of our house a bit. We do have new kitchen lights now though so I guess a day well spent anyway. 8:

Any chance we could get to hear the mastered versions of these mixes?

Thanks for the tips Marco. I assume a multiband compressor was used during the mastering phase (unfortunately I'm not allowed to make them public at this point...nor do I have them on this computer...maybe I'll post some samples..that shouldn't bend the rules too much:twisted:)

Good to hear you got something done around the house. Today was a cleaning day for me so I know the feeling.;)
