Well I waited ~20 years but finally got around to buying a Warwick. Never could get to like the Thumbs or Streamers. But last week tried a Corvette $$4. Unsurprisingly I didn't like it (finish, cheap feeling black H'ware, sound) but decided to go back and try the standard active corvette. Was amazed - happy to swap the MIM Jazz over to this as my workhorse. Looking forward to many years with it.

Thought I recognised the name - was it you I sold the status neck to just before Christmas - on a nasty cold day in New Mill?

I'm thinking of moving up from my Rockbass to a proper Warwick - like you I'm really into the look of the Corvette - I've thought about both the $$ and the standard active ash. What about the range of sounds of the $$ - did you use all that humbucker/single coil switchability, or did you just end up using one or two sounds? What is it about the standard J/J that you prefer? Are they heavy? Are they fretless (I'm 100% fretless now)? And why am I asking so many questions?

Hey Steve,

good to hear from yer. I've got the neck all bedded in now but It's going to go into a pro soon for a full fettle - I still struggle with neck relief and intonation set up on fretless. It took a while for the 'creaks' to settle down - tiny bit of movement in the heel but this seems sorted now. Also had to pull the truss rod from 'push to pull' to get a reasonable action. Have to say though - really makes a difference over the crap stock neck.
Anyhoo down to your thoughts.
1. $$ vs Standard JJ. I played the $$ in Electro for a full hour, tried as many sounds as poss and loved it - the wallet was out, the guy as sorting the paper work. While I was waiting I picked up a standard active JJ 'vette. Somehow the sound was cleaner and surprisingly 'punchier'. If you like the Jazz sound it's sort of JAZZ PLUS with added growl at the low end. Changed the paperwork and saved £45 in the process.
2. Weight - they are lighter than an MIM Jazz but not some of the US Jazzes (these seem to vary to me - sometimes you find a really nice light one). The Bubinga bodied is heavy to me but I think it maybe balances a little better?
3. I know your concern was weight when we met, I haven't played a gig with the Warwick yet so I'll let you know how a 2 hour set goes down. My initial thoughts are fairly positive though - plus a major surprise is the sustain and punchiness out of such an 'in-substantial ' bass (usually play a MM 'Ray). The only way I think you could go lighter but get such a good sound would be an all graphite Status or maybe an ash bodied graphite necked one.

im completly shocked you didnt like the corvette double buck! very surprising, but thats the best thing about warwicks theres a one out there for everyone! kind of like women you just have to try a few before you find a keeper.

Thanks for the reply. As an explanation, the reason I'm so bothered about weight is the result of a whiplash injury a few years ago. I once had a Yamaha BEX4 - a really heavy beast ! I had a rehearsal which lasted hours - the next morning my left arm had virtually seized up! Gigs are generally OK, but long rehearsals can be a pain. In reality, I think good balance is as important as the overall weight.

You've got me thinking about a passive Corvette now! I get a bit paranoid about batteries running out mid-gig. Maybe time to get selling some more stuff and make that trip to electro.

I assume (hope!) that the active can be run passive if the juice stops flowing - can someone confirm this?

Yep u r right, if ur battery runs out of power, just pull the switch and then you play passive and still got a beautifull sound. On my thumb there is no drop in volume which i think is great, just a little less bottom.

Think I'll be looking at an active then - best of all worlds and no paranoia!

I'm getting a severe case of Gear Acquisition Syndrome now! I only joined the forum a few days ago, thinking I'd got a great value bass with my Rockbass (I still think that!). Now I've made a deal with Mrs SJ - I get the new bass, she gets the new handbag (not a bad deal, even for an expensive handbag!). Likely to be going to Electro next Tuesday for a bit of a play.

Unfortunately, as I want a fretless, I'll probably have to try out a fretted and wait a few weeks for the fretless version.

Yes eusie, is right. I actually ran out of battery power during a show once and all I had to do was to pull the knob to get sound. The sound is a little different because some of the componentes in the elctronics can not operate with the battery, but the volume stays near the same on most Warwick basses.

Hi good luck at Electro music mate.
Personaly i find Dave in the bass dep't to be very unhelpful.
