A new mod... Sort of, This is less for visuals and more for increased strength!

Our new drummer breaks sticks like crazy! He broke 4 sticks that he bought about 3 or 4 days ago. I salvaged the sticks and brought them home. I'm going to put a fiberglass shell over them to increase the strength. I figure I'd post this on here along with pics for the heck of it.

I'll begin tomorrow so I'll problaby have pics up sometime tomorrow afternoon.

And since I'll be using epoxy/resin I'm trying to figure out what color I should use for the sticks. I have some black epoxy paint and some neon yellow paint. I figure I may use the neon yellow and makes it really stand out.

I was also thinking about making wenge drum sticks and putting a thick coating of epoxy over them to protect them from his vicious beatings.
 
Make them bright pink!! That will fix him!

Casey, silly question for you.

Can't he buy thicker sticks?

Seems like the fiberglass would alter the sound a little bit, not to mention that his hands may start itching once he breaks the integrity of the resin and the fiberglass particles start flying around.

I'm not sure what the impact resistance is of fiberglass.
 
Fiberglass+resin/epoxy is pretty strong stuff...

Plus I was bored and wanted something to do.

So I'm coating everything but the butt & tip of the drumsticks with fiberglass tape and epoxy. It's not going to be pretty, But this is really just testing to see if it has enough strength to hold up to his playing. If so, My next project will be a pretty set of fiberglass coated drumsticks...

Although I'm not sure how they're going to last.. He did manage to break a set of those metal drumsticks mentioned above :P
 
one drummer I know had a lot of problems because his stick-wasting was chewing up his cash. he simply bought carbon sticks and has the same set for almost 2 years - and he plays like a mean machine!

My drummer (not that good and mean!) is able to break even carbon sticks.

nevertheless I would recommend him checking them out.
 
mmm depends on what the drummer likes, my good mates a drummer and hates carbon sticks as they sound way different than wood, he's not a fan of plastic tips either....

The epoxy thing sounds cool, probably won't change the tone too much compared to carbon ones.

Only thing it may chip...dunno how chip resistange epoxy is...

The epoxy is pretty tough... I beat the sticks togethor a little bit after it cured and it's still intact. Epoxy is nice, Because the mixture I use it a little bit more flexible than brittle, But it's still insanely hard and durable. The sticks aren't pretty... But they are smooth and finished... I'll have him put them to the test tomorrow night and see how they work.

If they work out and he likes them, I figured I'll bring them back home throw a coat of paint on them to pretty em up a little add a couple more coats of epoxy to seal in the paint and they should be good to go. And all this cost me only $3 :)
 
I wonder if there's an orthopedic clinic near you, you might find out if their casting fiberglass expires (most medical stuff does) and offer to remove their expired glass for free. It doesn't really expire but there has to be an expiration date by law. That stuff is REALLY easy to use.


I'm off sick today, but will check at work tomorrow to see if any of our glass is expired (or if it expires, cath kits do so there's a good chance).
 
A couple of pictures...

They look pretty tacky right now due to me attempting to paint them. I may slap on a coat of black epoxy paint and 1 more thin layer of epoxy tonight/tomorrow so they look a bit better for practice tomorrow night... But then again I may not because this is really just a test set to see if they will stand up to his playing. These things are tough though!
 
Also, I didnt use very much fiberglass... As I just wanted enough to hold the epoxy in place and make everything evem. I used a bit more nearer the top though as thats where he usually splits the sticks at.

I used about 4 or 5 coats of quick set epoxy on them. Once again... Strong stuff! I beat the sticks together quite a bit just to see how they would stand up and it all it did was leave a few very small marks.
