I'm only posting this to get a "What should I expect?" response if the ligaments are torn or seperated from the bone. The X-Rays didn't show any breaks, but there is too much swelling right now to do an MRI. I rolled it slowing down after running, nothing crazy, but the pop I heard was pretty distinct and I have rolled my ankles a few times in the past. I am in a cast now for the next 2 weeks until I get an MRI and will be in a walking boot after that for who knows how long. Been taking percocet for the last 8 days, twice a day for the pain. I tried to tough it out, but its too much.

Has anyone done this in the past and had to have surgery? What should I expect? I am very athletic and in shape and a very, very active runner and mountain biker... not to mention all kinds of sports.

Any advice? Thanks,

Tim

Sick!
I also notice you have distinct dark hair growth on three of your toes and a very yellowish toenail on your big toe.

You're gonna have to chop that foot off, mate xD

Freaky stuff can happen to your feet for no apparent reason. My brother had his kneecap pop out of place when he was at work. He works at a cinema, in the kiosk. He was popping popcorn and turned around. All of a sudden he was laying on the floor
He also has an athletic build and strong feet. (He plays football)

Good grief... I don't believe this... read my thread from a few weeks ago... called "Instant Karma" (I think)
Your injury looks very different to mine... mine was an avulsion fracture, caused by the snapping ligament breaking off a bit of bone.
I was off work for seven weeks and I think my ankle will be weak and troublesome for weeks more, possibly months... keeps swelling up and is still painful... I can't walk very far.
The good news (for me) is that its not affecting my mountain biking or marathon training, as I'm a sedentary type and spend most of each day sitting around on my fat arse and eating cream buns

On a serious note... the advice I got was to exercise as much as possible, but if it causes pain... stop! Hope it gets better soon, I wouldn't wish it on anyone!

LOL! Hopefully you don't have a foot fetish. Feet were meant to stay covered. I didn't think about all you nut jobs before I posted. J/K

I normally wouldn't post pics of my feet, but I am looking for advice if the ligaments are torn. I hate being on injured reserve.

Thanks for the advice. I am really curious to see what the MRI says and I can't wait to get back on my feet. I was mountain biking about 80 miles a week before this, so hopefully I can get back on it soon. I am just worred about how weak it is going to be after surgery, should I need it.

Thanks for the advice and I will look for your post.

I wish the best for you, man. Trouble with your feet isn't funny. When I was in second grade I was in a wheelchair for two months and spent half a year with crutches after hip surgery. I had a cyst in my hip and the bone got so thin it fractured. Put me of all kinds of sports for many, many years. I couldn't play football. I started practicint tae-kwon-doe but when I reached such a level that we started "battles" or whatever, I had to quit. The risk was to big
This has left me quite badly trained as of today, and it sucks.

I had 'em torn a few years ago.
It looked a lot like yours, only even thicker and colored like a rainbow (so called "adidas stripes" - you have them around the ankle and the blood goes down to the sole. looks like 3 stripes ;) )
I had to pause for about 2 months. first without anything, 2nd with rehab.
It went well - the first time atleast.
I think yours will be okay in about one month, thats a regular torn-ligament time. Operations are pretty rare in Germany - in fact every good surgeon will try to avoid to open the joint capsule. So enjoy the nice weather - without moving ;)

What then happened to me is kind a nasty. Your ankle will never be the same after ligaments were torn. So it's much more probable you'll twist your it again. That's what happened to me - too often.
Beginning of this year I was at MRT and it showed that - in fact - there are no ligaments to tear anymore. All left is scar tissue. Have done a little rehab again (sponsored by the deutsche Bundeswehr ;) ) - but I don't feel like it helps. The doctor told me that from now on every twist could result in chrondal damage, and so cause a stiff joint. No handball, football, basketball for me anymore. (i'm doing/planing to do all of it a litte bit again. but definitley not as excessive as i used to. So I have to start biking, or swimming or whatever)

Moral of the story: Watch out from now on ;)

Ouch!!

Wishing you the best for a speedy recovery man!!

Hey man. I tore ligaments in my ankle in 8th grade (almost 10 years ago... holy sh%$ I'm getting old). I was playing basketball and came down on someone's foot. I heard two pops... still gives me the heeby-jeebies thinking about it. No fun at all. Sprains and torn ligaments are often worse than breaks in terms of long-term effects. Mine was really bad... 6 weeks in a plaster cast and 6 more weeks with a walking boot.

I'm athletic as well and it was EXTREMELY frustrating to have to be in a cast for so long... but it really is best to listen to what the doctors are telling you in terms of how long to stay off of it. By over-working it too soon you only run the risk of hurting even worse and / or making the ankle more susceptible to injuries down the road. It's true that now that you have this injury, you're much more likely to hurt it again. Stick with any physical therapy they recommend (as long as it's not painful). I know the PT can be a pain in the arse but you'll be glad you did it in the long run. Do some light strength training once it feels better and you're out of the cast.

Another big thing: do range-of-motion stretches every day!! I lost a lot of range-of-motion in my ankle because I didn't do this and it's a noticeable difference from before. My left ankle is the one that I hurt and that was my better jumping leg when playing basketball. Not the case anymore. All you have to do for these stretches is sit in a chair and cross your injured ankle over the other leg. Grab your foot with both hands and move it in a circular motion with your leg from the knee down being the axis you're moving around. Do this for 10 or 15 minutes every day. It's a good idea for the non-injured ankle as well.

Hope this helps. If anything else comes up, feel free to PM me. Best of luck bro.

Cheers,

Steve

Also forgot to mention.... if your ankle turns out anything like mine, you'll be able to be a pretty reliable weather forecaster. I can tell when it's going to rain and when the weather systems are changing by my ankle. It somehow became sensitive to changes in air pressure of the atmosphere and starts to throb when storms are coming... crazy stuff. I thought that was only 75 year-old farmers that could do that......

I don't know about ligaments, but I know somebody owes me lunch, cause that just made me hungry!

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I have an appt on Monday, so hopefully I will know the way-ahead as far as surgery/therapy goes. I've sprained my left one numerous times, but this one is the worst of all.

while I cannot offer any advice, I do want you to know you're in my prayers. And prayer has been working well in my favor during my current bone marrow/hospital episode!
