Alternative $$ pick-up position?!

Hello everyone!

My first Warwick is a Corvette $$ and I'm in love with it, even though it took a while to get used to it, especially tonewise. The sound is great, both growls and the lows are there, the highs ring the way I love them to ring but the overall sound seemed to have some dry feel to it. I think it has something to do with Warwick Black Label strings which are by now more or less worn out since I got the bass on the 26th of June and some of the dryness is actually gone but then I noticed something odd...

I haven't seen this pick-up positioning on anyone's $$ Corvette yet. The pick-ups are obviously closer to the bridge for some unknown reason...
The serial number is F 150725 09 (produced: 15/06/2009, and, just in case, not CS).

So what's up with that? A recent update? Does this also give a dry texture to my sound at all? Also what strings would you recommend to eliminate that? I like the chunck but I guess a mellower alternative would do just fine...



Also this shape of pick-ups is not as common... I've seen it but the slimmer shape with visible screw points is alot more popular.

The shape of the pup is quite different also, as you say. Much sleeker.

Actually that's kind of ironic since according to reviews of this bass people couldn't get enough high end from it and I was afraid of running into such a problem when I ordered it but I guess I got lucky :d
 
Makes much more sense to me, I always thought the bridge pickup was too far away well... from the bridge.
 
don't know why but you are lucky IMO... sounds more defined..
 
The pickups look like that on a 5 string as opposed to the 4.

But yes your pickups are closer to the bridge than mine that's for sure.

Yeah it does. I wonder if this spacing is standard from now on.

I was kinda shocked when I noticed that mine is different, but it's good to know that in a good way :d

Well all the 5 stringed $$ Corvettes I've seen in the Warwick Corvette Club thread have spacing different from mine... and some have differently shaped pick-ups too...

I've already asked this question before (in april), and I was told by Florin that if I ordered a $$-5 now, my PUs will be right in the middle and not like that close to the bridge...somehow, this bass shows it can be different...hmm...and looking on the newer Speacial Edition $$s, the 5-string basses all have that closer to the bridge setup...

Yes, we did some basses with this position :-) I think it is great for 5 stringers, so you are really lucky.
 
I kinda like the extra boom of the bridge pup moved forward... still, its not the first time warwick has made sutble changes like this

That's what bothered me actually. Warwick said that both $$ pick-ups covered some "sweet spot". I still feel insecure whether the sound might be choked with pick-up being so close to the bridge. I still feel the sound is kinda dry.

This thing is a beast for highs and lows, but I guess I'll need a Thumb or something for the mids, however that will not happen as soon as I'd want it to :confused:


Guys, I still think that my sound needs some modification tonewise. Can this by any chance be repaired with strings? Something more mellow and full-in-tone... Any options here?


Oh and Florin, is it possible to know how much basses were made with this spacing? :d

only some? ALL of the $$ 5 strings of '09 I've seen (ok this one being the sixth, 4 of them were in the same shop at the same time) had that position...

That's what happens with an ash body and a 2 band preamp ;)
Actually with both pickups closer to the bridge it should have plenty of mids so i dont know why it sounds like that.

The J/J config sounds impressive, some mids are definately there, but I guess Swamp Ash just won't pack a mid-range punch...

Oh so it IS an '09 update.
I knew it.
 
Honestly, that new pickup placement makes me VERY interested in a Double Buck 5er now.

Maybe in High-polish with a maple body...
