About strings...

I find the black labels that were standard on my corvette a little too big for my liking, I like the black labels, but I find the gauges a little wrong, I think the E is 105, and the A string feels like the same size as my E string was before.
Anyway, I haven't used more then 4 different strings, shame on me. Playing for 4-5 years I never realized the strings on my Squier was dead long time ago.

Yea, basically I've gotta start experimenting with different strings!
The question here is, can I just put different string gauges on my bass without worrying? If I get a set of strings, for example the black label L set. Where the E string is 095", it obviously won't fit the JAN.


Also, what strings and gauges would you suggest? I play funk/rock, rock and I like to slap.
(I know I should try and fail, but what do you guys like? )

Ben,

There are lots of threads about strings on the forum, but I can offer this:

If you make drastic changes in string gauge, either toward the lighter or heavier, the combined tension the neck feels (and consequently the truss rod) changes. It's pretty likely you'll need to do a complete setup.

Often the nut and saddle pieces are accomodating enough, but with big changes in gauge, sometimes the saddle pieces and nut grooves need to be widened, or with drastically lighter strings, replaced with more narrow grooves.

Also, with larger gauges, sometimes the string diameter will be too large to fit in the tailpiece.

If you go, let's say .100 to .040, you'll probably be OK.

I checked the price of DR Fatbeams at the music shop today. 500 Nkr. Thats about 93$. And 500 was reduced from 700 - 131$
F*cking state demanding 22% on EVERYTHING we buy -.-
But yea, I'm probly gonna have a go on the Fatbeams.. The gauge was 105-45, I think. I do know the fattest beam was 105. I may need a new JAN.

Yeah, we dont have public transit or state sponserd health care...

Im not to happy about that. All the money the goverment takes from me gets spent on killing people.

I bought some DR fatbeams yesterday, (I got a good price on them. 350 NKR) (66$)
I really like the strings, they're good and snappy! Thanks for the advice!

I would go for D'Addario XL 220 or XL 170. They cost 195 NOK at www.strenger.no. I mostly play funk and rock and do a lot of slapping and am very happy with both playability and the sound of these string, escpecially compared to the price.
