aargh....car trouble

I love my car. I do. Great gas mileage, reliable, mostly safe, still in good condition. I take it in for it's scheduled tune up (valve adjustments, new belts, etc.) and come to find out that I have a CV boot that's cracked, a leaky oil pan, and a massive hole in my exhaust.

I've been going to my mechanic for years, and he's incredibly honest about everything, and doesn't charge extra for parts. He showed me the cracks, leaks, and hole(s), and now I've got to drop big $$ into the car.

That's all well and good, but I feel especially bad because I was going to trade one of my basses, but now I really need the $ and have to back out of the deal.

Sucks big time.

Ah, you can hold out a few months on the Cracked CV. If you are not losing too much oil dont' worry too much about the Oil Pan. (just tightening the bolts may fix that leak). If the Exhaust is not loud how bad can that leak be?

I would do one at a time. If you are mechanical at all you may be able to fix some of this yourself. I'd rather do that than sell an instrument.

If the CV joint is leaking and is drying out I would do that first.

I would snug the bolts on the Oil pan to try to stop the leak. (don't go too tight)

For the exhaust you can take some time and save the money up.

I don't trust auto shops, especially when they all of a sudden tell you a bunch of things at once.

Im a qualified motor mechanic by trade, I would do the driveshaft boot first, as it will damage the CV joint if it runs out of grease, its cheaper to do the boot itself rather than the whole driveshaft. Does it make a rattle noise when turning corners? If so, you will need a reco driveshaft.

A hole in the exhaust is the next one I would do, no good having exhaust fumes getting sucked into the car.. Not healthy for you or your family.

The oil leak (if minor) can wait. As long as its not leaving puddles of oil on your driveway & you keep an eye on the oil level every week, it can wait. What sort of car is it?

If you have a good mechanic that has looked after you in the past, he should not have any problems in doing these repairs one at a time. Dont sell your basses!!!

as it was listed above the Joint should come first and these are not so expensive to get and any mechanic can install them I have done this in the past witrh friends that do not chrge me and they were about 1 or 1 1/2 labor hours.

then the oil pan might be an issue. just keep enough oil unitl you are able to fis x it. monitor the oil level. i had a car that every week was leaking oil and I was poutting about 4 quarts of oil every week and this happened for about 2 months then i fixed it and problem was taken care of.

then the exhaust hole there are some tape to seal these that they sell at bthe autostores that might help in the meanwhile you have enough money to repair it. I had a car that had this problem and i did this and still the mechanic did pass the inspection witht eh repair on this. so... i hope this helped
