I appriciate that this is basically the internet equivalent of thinking aloud, but how do you think an Infinity with a Thumb's pick-up placement sound? From what I've heard about the Infinity, I'm imagining something with a very balanced tone with plenty of growl and that delicious abrasive edge that I love the Thumb for. Perhaps this could be the way to the Infini-Thumb that I'm GAS-ing for? Your thoughts please!

i read a review here about a thumb NT vs an infinity and they sound galaxies apart to the point the reviewer had to use a totally different amp set up and had to play the infinity for awhile before he got use to the sound.... so i dont think a PUP reconfig would help much.

theres a bigger chance a thumb BO would sound like an NT over the above basses.

I think it will sound pretty thumbish... If you replace maple neck with ovankol or wenge, it will be very close ...

Another thought I had - see what you think to this one...

You know the mirrored P-P pick-up setup of the Buzzard (I think I remember someone saying it added clarity to the lows and depth to the highs). Now, consider a pair of humbuckers arranged into a triangular formation, with the peak of the triangle being coincident with the highest strings. How dya think that would work? Has it been tried before? I ask this because I'm intrigued to try the mirrored P-P setup, but I'm a 6-string man now!

This is hard to tell, only by testing you can have an idea... Let's ask Gregory, maybe it is possible to make PP for 6 strings as well... The P for 5 stringers have one piece for 3 strings, and one piece for 2 strings. I think theoretically it is possible to use 2 pieces for 3 strings...

Thanks for asking Flo! You know, in theory, everything is possible! To my knowledge, there is no Precision pickups type available for 6 strings from the big brand like Bartolini, Basslines, EMG, Di Marzio, Fender... And by the way, we have no project for such pickup developpement with MEC. If you want it, maybe you should talk with some custom pickups makers like Häussel, Delano, Nordstrand, Benedetti...

That would be me!!!

They are quite different sounding basses, but if you want a thumb sound, get another thumb!!! The Infinity does retain the thumb's growl and can deliver the mid you're used to if you use the pre-amp, but the maple gives it a much brighter sound.

Who said it would be maple? I requested a mock-up of this where it would have bubinga pommelé top and back, so it would basically be a hollowbody Thumb NT with F-holes - well, that's the idea at least!

(And yes, I am aware that this would be a money-no-object project )


As for the P-P thing, I was more considering using humbuckers in a triangluar formation to model the geometric configuration of a mirrored P-P as opposed to just using P-Ps.
