I recently brought my 1991 5-string Streamer Stage II into a local shop for a set up. The nut on the truss rod busted - questionable I know, but I had a new rod installed. Thought everything was cool when I picked it up. But when I took a closer look I noticed the nut was not even close to centered on the neck - no big deal. However now that I have the nut off and am ready to reinstall I am questioning upgrading to the JAN III. Any advise would be awesome! Will it improve my sound or take away?? I have heard the brass nut can lead to empty sounding strings??

There is a size difference lenghtwise of about 1-2 millimeters. This means it will not fit flush; you would have to move the truss rod cover up to compensate. Moving the TRC up means you have to drill a new hole:(:(

I believe the majority on this forum considered the JAN 1 to be the upgrade, rather than the other way around.

Brass nuts are not something to throw away or replace unless you really want to change the sound. I recently broke a JANII and put in a III without it changing the sound at all but going form JANI to JANIII will make real alterations to the sound.

As to moving the truss rod cover up (if you go ahead with it) in similar circumstances i filed down the truss rod cover mount (its just plastic) about 1/2-1mm to avoid drilling the headstock. With a nice bass better to risk wrecking plastic bits than to start drilling things.

I don't play a lot of open string notes, so I guess the nut doesn't matter except for set up purposes.
