i think the 10 and 12 are for 5 and 6 versions. however i have heard of 3 courses used on a bass (by a certain korn-associated bassist who's name is not mentioned around here). Ibanez made a 15 string bass for him.
has anyone got any sound samples for these beasts? would love to hear an octave strung wick......and how do they play? i can assume the strain on the necks from the strings would be massive on an 8 banger. I readthat this was one of the reasons that entwistle went to graphite necks- he loved 8s but he couldnt find stable timber necks for them.
