3 Pus Thumb 5, is that a good idea??

Dear All,

There is a 3 PUs Thumb bass in the forum, maybe there is sound clip but couldn't remember, I never had a Thumb 4,
I tried one before, very fast response & attack, better pop string sound.....than my Thumb NT 5.

I ask the quitar shop if I can get more bottom & punch and they said there is not neck pickup on this bass, they can dig a hole to put one in.......it sound so crazy to dig a perfect shape bass....

I like the focus tone of Thumb 5 and wild slapping of Thumb 4, so is that a good idea to have a 3 pickups Thumb 5 ???

Can I get both or get nothing?? maybe the TJ is a better idea!! like blande ??????

I advice against it. The NT 5 IMO sounds even better than the 4 for pop and slap.

I cant remember the guys name, but there is indeed clips of a 4 string thumb with 3 pickups, and it sounded awesome if i remeber! maybe he will chime in! i know his Avatar is a big smiling dinosaur!
 
In my opinion, I think you should not do it. For several reasons, being one of them that the bass will lose value in the used market.
Anyway I'm completly against modding instruments in a way that you can't reverse the mods, like in this case. Specially in a High end bass like yours. Just my 2 cents...

I am wonder how is the slap sound of that bass? both neck & bridge pus open, I check many of your clip but no slapping, I guess it could sounds like 4 string thumb....why did you sale it ? it could be a mighty Thumb bass......

Yes, I bought the bass from Paul, but unfortunately it stayed 3-4 days only :-)

This particular bass was very interesting. Like ... thumb NT meets SSII

The volume push pull pot was swithing between Bridge/Middle and Bridge/ Neck pup configuration. Sweet!

I found the slant of the beck pickup to be a little bit too extreme, but it actually brought a very interesting sound to the bass. Something like a warmer SSII.
Slap killer as well...

I loved that bass, but I would not mod my bass like that, because I would be afraid to carve another hole in my bass...

The slap sound was killer, really. EMG are amazing, solid lows (especially for a Thumb), and a very clear and articulated sound (maybe a bit less twangy than MEC's).

Why did I sell it (traded it in fact)?

Well, several reasons :

First, there was some buzz which was a bit annoying (I don't like fret buzzing, even if it's not serious at all).

And, the problem was that third pick-up. I love Thumbs. They're my favourites basses by very very far.
And, because they're my favourites basses, I like them totally genuine, just as they were out of the factory.
A 3 Pu's Thumb is great, but not very authentic.
So the love relation finally transformed into a hate relation (you see, I was thinking, man, it would be so great without that additional pick-up and I can't do anything to change that...etc.).

The day I can afford a original Thumb (new or used), I'll go for it, no hesitation. :D

I love the sound of the strings slamming against bell brass frets when I dig in on the Thumb. It adds an aggressive texture to the formidable growl. This all happens without the tone getting too "clacky".
