Pre-amplification onboard and offboard

So I'm kinda (seriously) considering upgrading the onboard pre-amp on my Thumb BO 5 string. Its an original MEC 2-channel, no mid control. I was thinking about switching it out with a MEC 3-channel, like the ones found on NT Thumbs.8: Will this make a noticeable difference to my tone? I mean...
