headroom

what does headroom mean when they are talking about amps P.S. no stupid answers

My bass currently has 18v on the battery compartment... How would the sound change if I dropped it to 9v? Would I get more or less of the Warwick sound? If I were to do this, would I simply just need to unplug one of the batteries and there would be no harm to the electronics? thanks!
