active or passive

I've got a Corvette Std 5, with MEC Gold pickups, and active preamp. I usually bypass the the active circuit by pulling my volume knob up, as I find it sounds great like that! I took the battery out, and the signal all but disapeared in passive mode...is this normal? I would expect it to...
