I took on bass duties for this album; not my music, and not the kind of music I usually play (this is a lot more melodic and harmonically "safe"), but fun nonetheless. Check it out if you like:

I spent about five hours this morning creating this. My plan was simply to screw around with plugins, for learning purposes. I wasn't actually trying to make anything good, but I ended up liking this.

For the curious, here's what I used:

Drums were performed by me on a Yamaha P-125, and quantized in Reaper. The drum plugin is the Drumplayer by 99Sounds. I also ran it through ReaXComp, a stock compressor that I actually like a whole lot.

The bell sound was created by me on a Korg Monologue. No plugins were used. The loop was programmed on the Korg, and MIDI-synched to the DAW.

The synth riff was also the Korg, done in much the same way as the bell, but this time running through the Sixth Sample Deelay, and EQ'd with the iZotope Ozone 11.

The bass part was played by me on the Yamaha or possibly the Korg, as a MIDI controller for the Native Instruments Hypha, then processed through the hilariously named Ruina (Noise Engineering), and then some ReaXComp. I will confess to quantizing it as well.

The chords on the downbeats are a combo of the Korg (no plugins) and my Epiphone Les Paul running straight into the interface, then processed using Native Instruments Guitar Rig 7.

The horns are a stock loop from Native Instruments Session Horns.

The atmospheric stuff floating on top is the Native Instruments Ethereal Earth, performed on the Yamaha. It's further processed by the Native Instruments Replika delay plugin.

And finally, there are two swooshy noises, which were created using the Surge XT synth plugin, and then running through the JS Ping Pong Pan, which is stock with Reaper.

BTW, every one of these plugins were free, with the single exception of Session Horns, which I purchased for an upcoming Uneven Steven recording.

I've done a ton of these "DAW" pieces in the past few weeks. What started as self-education has become an obsession! Rather than share them all, I figure I'll just drop one off now and then.

This one was a step forward for me because it was the first piece I got past just using programming and broke out some real instruments. I played P-bass, Les Paul, and an organ patch on my Yamaha digital piano.

I played it in my kitchen and my wife instantly started bobbing her head, always a good sign. You can sell your work to hip hop producers, it is perfect for them to create loops, and you are doing a great job, mate!

Thank you Florin! I've actually thought about trying to get into that market.

Finally catching up on this thread. Love this! Riff rock will never die! Your punchy, midrangey tone really sits perfectly in the mix, every note audible without overpowering. Perfect. I probably would have grabbed a pick and dialed in something very different, and I probably would have been wrong. The keys really add a cool vibe too. Most rock bands tend to treat them more as an afterthought, IMHO. Vocal harmonies are sick, or should I say sik? Love the riff that hits around 2:40. And bonus points for getting a guy named Asbjorn to play the reaper. Let's face it, if your name is Asbjorn, you were probably born for that role. :p
