Schaller Releases New S-locks (security Locks Facelift)

In 2018 Schaller presents the new facelift of security locks:
The S-Locks.
S for save, S for silent and S for Schaller strap locks!




What is new:

The lock thread was extended for thick leather straps (a problem I have with a Richter strap, still the washer doesn't fit on it).
The bolt was angled for an easier slideing and reconstructed, that it won't make noise anymore while using it.

The washer and the nut were replaced by the lock wheel. The biggest change.
Instead of using locktite for the nuts, this version should be 100% fixed.


The strap button+screw is now solid and will be fixed with a metric hex.
The thread should now fit also for gibson instruments ( but anyway they bust ).
The only point where i see problems, when you need a longer screw. E.g. the old Fortress basses which had Dunlop Flush Mounts and i used longer screws to use Schallers on them.

But the locks will be 100% compatible with the old pins. So no problem in using older ones.

Awesome. I thought a product named S-lock was already around. I believe Warwick manufactured Schaller style locks with that name.

 

The actually do a Dunlop style lock. It was called Security Lock.

As promised my (belated) review:

The first impression of the locks is nice. The packaging was changed, so the felt washer are already under the pin.
I would like to thank the company Schaller and Dr. Bünning to provide me the S-Locks free of charge.
I have no business relations to Schaller and I am not working for them



On the old security locks the thread was too short for my thick Richter leather strap, I could only screw the nut, the metal washer didn't fit under it.
Besides I prefer the new pin, it is easier to grip than the old ball pin.

The new metal washer/"Lock-Wheel" is easy to screw by hand. To fix the rest you can use a 2mm hex wrench (ofc metric, the imperial system is sick )
After fixing the threaded pin, I am pretty sure nothing will loose up in the future

The pins are installed on my Hoyer Cloud Atlas from the 80ies. The locks slide easily in due to the angled edge and snap in as usual.


Only on my DIY solutions like on my Fortress basses, where i needed longer screws due to the former installation of Dunlop flush mounts, this concept is quite unflexible.
This is the only critical point i see on this system. Therefore you can still buy the old Schaller pins, which are compatible.


Conclusion: All in all I am very happy with the facelift of the S-Locks. With this concept Schaller has won the fight between the Security locks manufactures.
Every problem I saw on my old locks, was solved pretty nicely.

 

I just installed a set of those. Schaller had the best strap locks in the market and managed to make them even better. I particularly like the allen key screws for the pins. Especially for hard woods like the ones Warwick uses, it can be a challenge installing screws with Phillips heads.

 

I was wondering, where exactly did you use the 2mm hex wrench? In the pictures you seem to stabilize the lock wheel using a screwdriver, same thing I did.

Ah I see, but why do you leave space between the strap and lock wheel?

 

There is no space between the strap and the lock wheel, it seems to be different on the pic

 

Silly me, now I get it. I use the allen key trick to set the height of potentiometer knobs when installing them.
