The first one sounds more P-Bassy to me, but I really like the clarity and subtle growl of the second one too!

Must be the passive pickups and also placement which on the Corvette is pretty traditional, close to a Jazz Bass setup.

I am practising Oscar Pettiford solo on Tricotism

John Goldsby did a transcription in his excellent Jazz Bass Book.

I have that book. Great book. Every once in a while I pull it out and get my ass kicked.

    It's a good book
I recommend it to anyone interested in learning bass

Do you have the Jamerson Motownbook? IMO it's a bit like that , open it at any musical exercise or transcription and dig in.

    Deep practice is good practice.

When I started this thread, I said contributions could be something you wrote, or something you learned. Here is an example of the latter. I've always loved Duck Dunn's interpretation of "Mrs. Robinson" with Booker T and the MGs. I basically learned the whole song, except I've still got to get some of the specific walks between root notes. But in the spirit of this thread, here is me playing the main riff only:

You have a very clean attack, very nice. I 'm trying to guess what this is played on. It's hard to tell. My first thought was a mostly soloed P, but it could also be a J or two Js close to center detent. I'm pretty sure it is passive however.

I can hear the straight up solid drum beat and fading in horns already, very nice.

Thanks. Yes, I'm plugging the bass directly into a Tascam US 2X2. I also added a little compression in Audacity.
