    Hello,

What’s your thoughts on this bass? Do they have the Warwick growl?

    Thanks

Good question! There aren't too many Katana owners on here, but no doubt it has a little bit of that growl, just due to the electronics and it's birthplace ofc :)

As much as other Wicks that have angled pups and dense hardwoods...maybe not. Also, and I could be very wrong, much of the famed Warwick growl came in part due to EMGs on early models...and the Wenge fretboards of those early Thumbs, Streamers, Dolphins etc. In my experience with what I own, that growl is much more prevalent with my '85 Thumb (Wenge/Wenge/EMG) than it is with my Thumbs from the 2000's that have Ovangkol/Ebony/MEC. Those have more of a crisp "piano" sound.

Then again...there are a lot of diehard Warwick fans who say they have no idea what this "growl" is all about :D So it's certainly somewhat subjective :)

I've never seen a Katana BO, but I played some NT's. Nice instruments, probably some of the most unwarwicky sounding :) So except a fenderish sound, with some extra Warwick goodness, probably similar to a corvette.

    Thanks All.

The one I’m looking at is ash body with ovangkol neck with Wenge board. With all stock MEC electronics. This bass is in excellent condition. It’s the French Violet color.

Katana BO? No real growl, but big ball bottom end! Doesn’t like downtuning, that’s why a real B string should be a good solution. But what I am talking about? Paul can tell you!

    My 4 string in action:

Yah I do play mine more trebly for sure, but it is a great bass, I love how it sounds upper register like 8-12th fret on the d and g that thing sings! I sent oddball a few of my tunes so he could hear it in action, hope they don't scare him lol

Hey Paul, the clips you sent sound great. The bass really cuts through nicely. Big and round. Do you happen to remember your settings on the bass?

Hardy, your video was rocking. Great band. Do you have more videos to share?

    Thanks All,

    Shaun

I set the pickups with blend slightly towards the bridge and a slight bass boost. That's it. I keep the EQ on the amp pretty flat. Dean Markley Blue Steel medium light are the strings.

I’m the same way. Keep it simple. If you boosted the bass pretty close to max does it get real big? I am asking to see how flexible does the EQ get.

Yeah u can boost it pretty good to sound thick like Hardy has it. You can hear the difference between the way mine sounds and his sounds, his is a lot meatier.

Since the one I’m looking at is a BO it will not have a mid control. Will that be an issue in your opinion?

The lack of a mid control never bothered me, but I guess it depends on your style. You can always compensate with your amp EQ.

That is very true. Do you have more sound samples? I really enjoyed them.

    Thanks

Lol thanks man. I have one more tune with the Katana but my playing isn't great. We recorded those songs after a 5 year hiatus. We practice them once and recorded the second take. So they're rough!

It’s all good. They sound very good. I can hear the Warwick in the Katana. It’s very full sounding with the Warwick top snap.

Yeah it is nice. I think you can get it fuller, that's just how I like it, but it sounds like a Warwick to me.
Will send the other song tomorrow

No, not with the oil finish. If you are a heavy slapper you can leave marks in the finish. I have after years with it. But I don't care, gives it character. .

Join the Katan club if you get it
