Does anybody know where I could get a replacement MEC preamp for my 87 88 ?? Thumb. Since a power outage/restore at a gig recently I am intermittantly getting volume loss and distortion. It has to be the preamp going faulty, I have metered out the wiring and checked all solder joints, the jack etc etc and can find no fault There is a pic of the preamp in my posting on the Vintage Warwicks area (posted 29/07/09 1989 Thumb NT Ferrari Red). I am thinking of putting in a Bartolini preamp but would prefer to install an MEC one in order to keep the bass as original as possible. Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Thankyou
    Dave

Hi Greg, yes brand new Duracell, resoldered all connections on pots and jack. The weird thing is that when it "goes" if I short any of the terminals on the stacked bass/treble pot down to ground just briefly (IE just touch a small screwdriver between the body of the pot and any terminal) the preamp bursts back into life again, and can be ok for the next 5 mins or 5 days, completely random, very odd. I suspect I will finish up putting in a Bartolini NTBT-918 2-band Preamp as the chances of getting an indentical MEC preamp are remote to say the least.

It's a long shot, but are the earthing wires all soldered to the right things, if not you will only get a very quiet (or none) sound. Just seems weird that it springs back to life wen you earth it.

Sometimes Caps and electronics parts holding small amounts of
energy will loose there ability to keep the charge, so when
they are hit with some sort of new connection, like the screwdriver
etc, they will come back to life for only a short amount of time
    like you are seeing.

unfortunately, because of the design in your preamp, the black box
there is no real way to replace it.

i wont rub it in, but the only one i know of around is in my bass...

let me check through some bag of tricks i have to see if i have
    anything close around the shop.

    ill keep you posted
