Might just be me, but I swear my 2009 Corvette is starting to sound closer to a Thumb (less bright, deeper, more well rounded). Am I alone?:!:

You're probably right. It's too bad, I like this darker tone.

I'm no expert but my Thumb sounded bright and not so deep n well rounded... Maybe it was sounding like a Vette?

Nothing says less bright and well rounded more than two pickups shoved right against the bridge!!

Haha. I am also not sure if an '09 is considered that old. Maybe you are getting in tune to the qualities of your bass or maybe you're finally getting the perfect setup. I don't recall much difference in tone over time with my basses. Maybe someone with a 90s one might have noticed something.

The neck pickup is actually pretty decent distance from the bridge. Also, pickup angle helps mitigate some of the brightness as the treble side is pushed away, not towards.

Meh. My bass and rig sounds different each time we practice. I was thinking maybe air pressure and humidity are having their effect on sound.

My 90 Thumb 5 is bright or many treble you name it, it's brighter than my 05 thumb 4 and 6, I think the age and pickups placement caused that.

I am not playing it oftenly as before because its bright and less bass (bottom), but it's has the most focus sounds than other bass.

I like new Warwick better if I have to choice.

That's great and all, but both of the Thumb's pickups are closer to the bridge that a Corvette (neck pickup too). Even though the bridge pickup is slanted, it's still closer to the bridge than a Vette. Closer to the bridge = brighter, usually by a dramatic amount. I can't imagine soloing my thumb's bridge pickup for any legitimate purpose...

It is strange, but in reality the thumb bass feels really low and punchy in the mix... Actually lower and punchier than corvettes :)

Technically speaking, you only NEED to change your strings once they break. I too prefer the tone of my wicks as the strings start to break-in. New string are just too bright and squeeky for my desired tone. In fact I have strings on my Thumb Bass that are over 5 years old. Remember the most important factor in preserving your strings is to wash and dry your hands before you play.

Or a shortcut to getting the darker sound of old strings is just to use flats ;)

How long will it take for us to start hearing about a 'sweet vintage Warwick' tone coming from people playing older instruments?
